Around the Classrooms

Foundation

Foundation students have had their first full week of school and will now come to school on Wednesdays! The extra day of school meant that students had their first lesson of House Sports and Indigenous Studies. Another highlight has been students learning about which house they are in! See if your student can remember which house they are in?

We hope you enjoy some of our photo highlights including developmental play, Digital Technology and some great action shots of our preparation for Athletics Day!

Junior Indigenous Studies

Students have continued exploring Wadawurrung Country this week, in particular looking at the names of places in our region. Using the Wadawurrung Language app, students were able to see how the names of many places in our community originate from Wadawurrung Language. For example ‘Ballarat’ is a word from the Wudawurrung language. The students described how the use of these traditional names demonstrates respect towards Traditional Owners.

The Wadawurrung Language App is free to download!  Students have explored the ‘Places’ section this week and were excited to see the links between the names of local places and Wadawurrung Language. It is a great interactive tool and we have no doubt students will enjoy sharing what they have learned at home with their families.

Year 1 and 2

During their Wednesday afternoon maths session, the grade 1/2s worked on their data collection and graphing to uncover how much rubbish was in the school yard. Students tried to find rubbish from different categories, like soft plastic, hard plastic, paper/recycling and other. Students worked with the teachers to help categorise the rubbish they collected, and then tallied up the results. The students also practised their estimation skills, guessing how many pieces were in each pile.

The 1/2s were shocked to discover that there were 105 pieces of soft plastic in the yard, 70 pieces of hard plastic, and 65 pieces of other rubbish like material, metal, and cans! This was very disappointing, and the students hope that after Green Day this week, there will be no more rubbish around the school yard.

Students were able to transfer their tally data into bar graphs, which helped them clearly see the most common rubbish which is left around the school! Soft plastic was definitely the most common!

Junior School Garden Discovery

The Junior School are really enjoying getting out in the garden each week and working away to get our garden back into ship shape after the holidays.  We have been busy caring for the chickens, mulching, watering, weeding and planting seeds.  So far we have corn, cucumber, capsicum, chili, watermelon, gogi berries, celery and potatoes in the garden!

Year 3 and 4

In Personal Learning this week, students in Grade 3/4 have been practising recognising the emotions of others and understanding why people feel different emotions. Students created some scenarios which displayed emotions and then acted them out to the class. The audience then had to infer the emotions and interpret how people felt. This has been helping us in the classroom and in the yard to read body language and the feelings of others, so that we can support our mates.
