English Department Update

Year 7 Literacy in 2022

Welcome Year 7 students and parents. We are the Year 7 English & Literacy Enrichment Team and we would like to introduce ourselves to you.

L-R: Mr Gary Garside, Mrs Julie Reeves, Miss Tierney Evans, Ms Emma Arthur, Mrs Kiara Dunn and Mr Liam Coglin

Recently, we completed testing all Year 7 students to determine their current reading and writing skill levels to help us develop plans to support all students as they enter high school. We have started the year strongly with Independent Reading and Guided Reading in our classrooms and Julie Reeves has started working with the first Literacy Enrichment group of students. It is our aim to support all students as they continue to improve their essential reading and writing skills and grow into confident and engaged readers. We look forward to working with students and parents and welcome any enquiries about individual student progress. Please email teachers via Compass or call the college on 51279200.

Year 7 Narrative Writing

Last year in English, Year 7 students were asked to write a mystery short story that features a box as part of their study of narrative writing. The teachers were impressed with the creativity of the submitted stories. The following students particularly caught the teachers’ attention, and their stories will be published in an anthology that will be available to read in Lowanna College Library.

  • Sarah Berg wrote a sophisticated story about how karma can be cruel
  • Caelum Hillbrick came up with a time-shifting, dimension-jumping extravaganza
  • Zane Poxon’s plot twist shocks a main character living in a simulation
  • Bailey Beecher wrote a tale of a grieving father who seeks revenge
  • Connor Palmer ends a mysterious story with a shocking twist
  • Sarah Dyer explored the constraints of imagination
  • Connor Jones wrote an exhilarating story about a train that goes rogue
  • Bella Walravens’s tale revolved around a shadowy antagonist with a twist
  • Matilda Wood told a story of an ice-cream trip gone wrong
  • Ruby Schembri wrote a narrative that ends on a thrilling cliffhanger
