Owl Box Installation

Peter Collins, Waste Education Officer for Latrobe City Council has assisted in organising this event which the council has funded, for the installation of the 4 Boobook owl boxes created by Lowanna Woodwork students and Lowanna Leadership for Sustainability students.

Brad and Toby the owl box installers recently collected the owl boxes that were made by our students two years ago, and have painted them in a special white coating which reflects 70% of the UV, preventing the boxes from getting too hot in the day time.

During the installation, Brad and Toby had the options of using a rope with an anchor, or a rocket launcher to get the rope over the tree branch, and then climb up the tree. The installation was done using an electric bolt drill to screw the bird boxes to the trees. The Boobook owl boxes were placed in Ollerton Reserve in strong, healthy gumtrees about 20m off the ground, facing in a South Easterly direction to avoid rain and wind entering the nest.

Despite the fact that Boobook owls hatch their young in spring, they check out the options for nesting locations very early in the year, which is why the nesting owl boxes need to be installed now, in summer instead of winter or spring closer to the mating time.

Previous Boobook owl boxes created by Lowannna students and installed by Latrobe City Council in Ollerton Reserve adjacent to the Lowanna Secondary College have been seen to have native wood ducks flying in and out of them.  Other creatures that might be looking for a home are our wonderful but endangered sugar gliders'. So lets hope that we have given them a safe place to breed and build up their numbers again after the bushfires of 2019/2020.

Leadership for Sustainability students: Matilda Smith, Gemma Webb, Brianna Leonard, Noah Parkinson, Montana Maher, Taryn Brown, and Mrs Judith Stewart the group organiser.

Student Leadership for Sustainability Program
