Susan McLean - "Your choices online can have consequences offline."

On the 16th of May, we had the privilege to attend the Monash Business Network Lunch with Susan McLean, who is a leading cyber safety expert, with 27 years of experience with Victoria Police. Her expertise is in interacting with businesses and protecting them online, alongside informing adolescents on how to be safe online.  She indicated the top three social media platforms that have a high potential for bullying and sextortion are TikTok, Snapchat, and Discord and currently data shows that boys are being targeted. She recommends that parents should not be complacent about their children’s internet safety and that education about these dangers is imperative. Furthermore, she pointed out that even small, misjudged actions online can one day prevent us from getting a scholarship or dream job.

Susan also provided some practical strategies regarding how to protect yourself online, such as, using a different email address for your personal use, a different one for professional use, and not having a photo image of yourself as your social media profile picture.

Respect, Responsibility, and Reputation are the 3 R's to protect your identity online.
