Unit 1 Geography Excursion

This semester in VCE Unit 1 Geography, students have been studying hazards and disasters. As part of this study, they are required to use fieldwork techniques to investigate a hazard in a local area. This year, we focussed on flooding, and have considered the risk of flooding occurring in a section Dandenong Creek, Wantirna. To facilitate this, a fieldwork trip occurred last Thursday, 11th May.

During the excursion, students used a range of data collection methods from the very high-tech to the very simple. For example, the GPS function of students’ mobile devices was used to collect the location of important infrastructure, flood management strategies and potential flood impacts. Water depth, on the other hand, was measured using twine, sinkers and measuring tapes!

Back in class, students are using the data they’ve collected to write a report answering our research question on the likelihood of flooding and likely severity of the effects of a flood, should one occur.

Well done to our students for their excellent demonstration of school values on the day, and for walking well over 10,000 steps without complaint! Thanks also to Mrs Howard and student teacher Ms Gao for coming along to help out.
