Student Wellbeing

Zones of Regulation

Our recent Curriculum Day focused on student wellbeing and the development of curriculum to support students wellbeing and social skills.  We had a priority focus on the Zones of Regulation and the importance of understanding that we all have a range of emotions, and overtime develop social and emotional skills to support a healthy and robust wellbeing. The Zones of Regulation (Leah Kuypers, 2011) is a framework which aims to help people gain skills in recognising and regulating their emotions, leading to increased control and problem solving skills.  The framework teaches learners scaffolded skills toward developing a cognitive pathway to build awareness of their feelings and utilise a variety of tools and strategies for regulation, prosocial skills, self-care, and overall wellness. This includes exploring tools and strategies for mindfulness, sensory integration, movement, thinking strategies, and healthy connection with others.

When students are dysregulated, we don’t expect them to change Zones, we want to support them to regulate within, manage, or take care of our Zone. This allows us to honour their authentic feelings while supporting them to meet the demands of their environment and support their well-being.

The Zones of Regulation consists of 4 different coloured zones to help identify and recognise different emotions.  The zones include the colours blue, green, red and yellow. This is going to be a big focus in every classroom for Term 2. Over the coming weeks we will share the zones and provide you with examples and the language that we are using.
