CONGRATULATIONS POSSUM MAGIC!

Possum Magic by Mem Fox and Julie Vivas has turned 40 this year. This wonderful story has become an Australian Classic and is enjoyed by children everywhere. Who could forget Hush and Grandma Poss who travel around Australia trying to find the secret ingredient to make Hush visible again. The story was first published in 1983 and has not been out of print. Well done and I hope it is enjoyed by our students for another 40 years!

AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN’S LAUREATE 2022 – 2023

Gabrielle Wang is continuing her journey as Australia’s Children’s Laureate for 2022 and 2023. As I have said in previous newsletters the role of Children's Laureate is awarded once every two years to an eminent author of Australian Children's books to celebrate outstanding achievement in their field and to acknowledge their importance in creating the readers of tomorrow.

Gabrielle has just released a new book titled Zadie Ma And The Dog Who Chased The Moon. I look forward to adding a copy to our collection. Gabrielle’s two year theme is “imagine a story.”

If you would like more information regarding Gabrielle Wang go to her website https://gabriellewang.com/ for activities, books, blog, events, tips for young writers and interviews.

EDUCATION WEEK

Education Week is a great time to find books that you may not have seen before as well as a good chance to enjoy some extra reading. The theme for Education Week is Active Learners: Move, Make, Motivate.

Move

Move that Mountain by Jol and Kate Temple

Don’t ever think you are too small to make a difference or help someone. This picture book tells the story of a stranded whale and when everybody cooperates and works together, great things can be achieved.

Make

Books Make Good Pets by John Agard

The summary for this book says “Books make good pets and don't need going to the vet. Did you know that a book can take you anywhere? You only need to turn the pages of a story, and in a moment, you and your book could be crossing the waves in a pirate ship... or diving with mermaids... or even snoozing with a dragon. Books really do make good pets! Why don't you peep inside this one, and take your mind on an adventure?”

Motivate

Don’t Read This Book! by Jill Lewis

One of the biggest motivators is being told not to do something however this also makes us ask questions, reason and think about things. This picture book takes you on a journey of discovery by telling us not to read the book. In this way we become curious and want to discover more. This is a fun and engaging interactive story.

Stories are all around us – try something new during Education Week and as Dr. Seuss said “read, read, read – the more you read, the more you learn!”

THANK YOU

Thank you to Miss Blackwell for her recent book donations. We now have two new picture books: Miss Understood by Kathryn Apel and All The Ways to Be Smart by Davina Bell. Thank you very much.

Enjoy Education Week!
