Year 3/4 Term 2 Overview
Term 2 Year 3/4 Overview
Welcome back to Term 2! We hope you found time to relax and recharge with your family and friends and your that your Easter celebrations were extra special. We welcome Rebecca Clarnette, a preservice teacher from Swinburne, who will be in 3/4C for the next few weeks.
This term promises to be a busy nine weeks with Gala Days, Jump Rope for Heart, Grandparents Day and First Eucharist to name but a few of the activities and events. We will also be having a Bike it Safety day on Wednesday, 17 May, with more details to follow in the coming weeks.
Religious Education
Linking in with our Inquiry unit, we will be exploring different perspectives of gospel accounts of the events following Jesus’ death, Resurrection and the lead up to Pentecost. Students will learn about the important sacrament of Eucharist and how this relates to our context today.
Mathematics
This term, in Number and Algebra, we will be focusing on Fractions and Multiplication. Students will be learning about modelling and representing fractions including halves, quarters, thirds and fifths. They will also be investigating equivalent fractions and making connections between fractions and decimals. We will then move to a focus on measurement, specifically in the area of 3D objects, perimeter and area.
We will continue to use the pedagogical framework of launch, explore, summarise, in which students will be encouraged to be independent problem solvers and verbalise their thinking processes throughout each lesson. All lessons are preceded by fluency practice and supported by the online Mathletics program.
Literacy
Students will continue to develop their literal and inferential comprehension skills by reading and viewing a variety of texts in small focus groups. Students will continue to use rich literature and mentor texts to help them make deliberate decisions about how and what they choose to write. One of the texts we explore this term, ‘Refugees’, will help students delve deeper into the language, grammar and themes that relate to our History unit in Inquiry.
Social & Emotional Learning:
This term in SEL, we will be focusing on Relationships, and how our similarities and differences can affect our relationships. The students will be exploring what makes a good friend and what are the qualities we look for in a friend. They will be discussing someone they admire and comparing that person’s qualities to themselves.
Inquiry:
This term students will be focusing on Australian history with a particular emphasis on exploring different perspectives of the same event. They will be engaging in conversations about Aboriginal culture, how this is evident in our local environment and understanding what it means to be displaced from your home.
Physical Education:
Students will be participating in an action filled term with gala days, sporting schools’ visits for soccer and football as well as an active participation in the jump rope for heart program. Students will be participating in practice sessions for their gala day sports in our weekly 3/4 extra sport sessions.
Homework:
Homework will be sent home in Week 3 and follows a similar structure to the previous term. Students will have compulsory and choice activities that can be completed over two weeks. Please encourage your child to complete tasks to the best of their ability and submit something (even if not completed) at the end of the fortnight. If your child is struggling to attempt their homework on their own, please speak to us.
