Year 1/2 Term 2 Overview

Year 1/2 Term Two

Welcome to Term 2

Welcome back, after what we hope was a relaxing break. We have commenced the term showing respect to our ANZAC veterans. We created a collaborative artwork and read several picture books to teach students about ANZAC day. We also made ANZAC biscuits in our STEM lesson. The following outlines what we will be covering this term in our learning areas.

Religious Education

Our focus for this term will be on the Bible. We will be exploring scripture stories which show how Jesus created positive relationships in his community. We will discuss these teachings which demonstrate how we can make better choices to build ‘right relationships’ within our own community, so that we can build a better future for ourselves and others.

Mathematics

In Mathematics we will continue to strengthen our use of Exploring Mathematical Challenges as we develop and implement rich learning experiences for all students.

Our topics will include

  • Multiplication and Division - Students will explore how to solve simple problems which involve grouping and sharing. Students will be encouraged to use repeated addition, equal grouping and arrays as strong strategies to solve multiplication and division problems.
  • Statistics and Probability - In this unit students will be learning about data representation. Students will develop skills in collecting, checking, classifying and representing data through the use of lists, tables and graphs.
  • Money and Financial Mathematics - We will be working towards being able to recognise, describe and order all Australian coins and notes. Students will experience situations where small collections of coins and notes need to be counted.
  • Location - Students will give and follow simple directions as they interpret simple maps of familiar locations in our unit on Location.

Literacy

In Reading, we will continue to work on developing fluency and expression with a focus in reading groups, on the following comprehension strategies:

  • visualising
  • author's purpose
  • comparing and contrasting

In Writing, our focus this term will be on recounts and narrative pieces. Students will have the opportunity to use their imagination creating fictional texts with a focus on adding more detail using adverbs and adjectives. Rich literature will be used to strengthen the language we use. Handwriting will continue to be a focus as students aim to form all upper and lowercase letters correctly.

Inquiry

“How is our indigenous past present in our community and how does it impact our story today?”

This term during our Inquiry learning, we will be exploring our personal history and the history of our community. Students will explore celebrations from different cultures around the world. Students will also explore the celebrations and history of Indigenous Australians within our community and discuss how their journey impacts our past, present and future.

Home Learning

  • Daily reading and recording in reading records.
  • Weekly spelling practice with words we’ve misspelled in our writing
  • Mathletics - Tasks will be set in Mathletics relating to classroom topics to consolidate learning. It is not expected that students would complete all tasks in one sitting.

Specialist Subjects

Students will have specialist classes each week on a Tuesday and Thursday (please see timetable below). Each Wednesday we will have STEM, Digitech and Class Sport Rotations. Students will stay with their class group and rotate through the different activities. Mrs Read will teach STEM, Mr Boyd will teach Digitech and Mrs Webb will teach Class Sport.

Sport uniform is to be worn on Tuesday and Wednesday.

We will visit the Library every Friday and borrow different books for Home Reading.
