Prep Term 2 Overview
Prep 2023 Term Two
Welcome to Term 2! It has been a wonderful start to Term 2 with the Prep children settling easily back into the routines of school. We began the term showing respect to our ANZAC veterans. We read several picture books toteach students about ANZAC day. We also made ANZAC biscuits inour STEM lesson and participated in a whole school and classroom reflection.
Curriculum Overview
Religious Education
Our focus for this term will be on the Bible. We have begun by looking at how the bible is organised into the Old and New Testaments. We will be exploring scripture stories which show how Jesus created positive relationships in his community. We will discuss these
teachings which demonstrate how we can make better choices to build ‘right relationships’ within our own community. So we can build a better future for ourselves and others.
Literacy
In Reading we will be exploring narratives. We will be identifying the characters and setting, retelling stories using Beginning, Middle and Ending. We will then be examining more closely the problem and resolution in narratives. In reading we will also explore Indigenous texts connected to our Inquiry Unit by reading Dreamtime and Indigenous stories.
In Writing we will continue writing recounts and the focus will be writing in full sentences and adding extra detail. Our Success Criteria will be using capital letters to start a sentence, having spaces between our words, recording all the sounds we can hear in words and then finishing with a full stop. We will also explore Narrative writing, beginning with describing characters and settings in books we have read and then creating and describing our own characters.
We will continue our Smart Spelling program, exploring letters and their sounds and using this phonemic knowledge to read and write simple words.
Mathematics
In Mathematics we will continue to strengthen our use of EMC3 - Exploring Mathematical Challenges as we develop and implement rich learning experiences for all students.
Our topics for Term 2 will include:
Number & Algebra
● Addition - Students will explore how to solve simple problems which involve addition by counting forwards, modelling using materials and learning simple number facts.
● Patterns - In this unit students will sort and classify familiar objects and explain the basis for these classifications. We will also explore patterns by continuing patterns and then creating patterns with objects and drawings
● Multiplication - The students will be introduced to multiplication through sharing. We will use concrete materials to share into equal groups and explain why they are equal or the same. We will use terms such as fair/unfair, equal and unequal, larger and smaller. We will Practise sharing using stories and everyday contexts to explore sharing fairly.
Measurement & Geometry
● Positional Language - The students will follow and use locational language by describing the location of objects in relation to another. They will give and follow simple directions to get from one place to another.
● Time: To explore time the children will compare and order the duration of events using the everyday language of time such as longer, shorter, earlier, later, morning, night and days of the week. We will also rehearse the days of the week, and connect days of the week to familiar events and actions.
Inquiry
Exploring History tis term we will discover “How our indigenous past is present in our community and how does it impact our story?”
This term during our Inquiry learning we will be exploring our personal history and the history of our community. Students will explore celebrations from different cultures around the world. Students will also explore the celebrations and history of Indigenous Australians within our community and discuss how their journey impacts our past, present and future.
