Canberra Camp 2023

Our 5/6 students went to Canberra in Week 9 of Term 1 and what a fantastic time that was! They were lucky enough to participate in an education tour of our national capital, somewhere where many of our students (and staff) have never visited before our camp experience. Students were provided with the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Places visited included: The Australian War Memorial, Parliament House (old and new), Capital Hill, Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD), National Electoral Education Centre (NEEC), Questacon, AIS, to name a few.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist in meeting the cost of our camp, the Australian Government contributed a funding of $45.00 per student, under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program, towards those costs. The rebate will be paid directly to our school. We thank and appreciate the Government for their assistance.

Our camp was a wonderful experience for our students ticking off many 'firsts' for many of them - first time on a plane, first time in another state, first time to Canberra. Congratulations to our 5/6 students and all that they accomplished during their time in Canberra. 4 days away from home is hard, but you were all fantastic. A big thank you to our amazing staff and parent helpers who ensured this experience was one to remember for our students.

Our students experienced all that Canberra had to offer, taking home stories, memories, lots and lots of souvenirs and tired eyes ready to sleep in their own beds and eat their favourite meals.

We cannot wait to continue our camp program and share our learning with you. Camp is such a valuable experience for our students enabling our students to further develop their learning and social skills in a non-school environment, as well as, being an integral part of the educational programs offered at our school.

Michael Sukkar visit

Michael Sukkar, our Deakin Parliament Representative, visited our 5/6 students in week one to talk to them about his role as an MP, what he does in Canberra/Parliament and his roles and responsibilities. Our 5/6 students asked many insightful questions and engaged in some critical thinking about the importance of what our Local Parliament members engage in.

Thank you to Michael for making time to come and speak to us.
