MATHS AT OPEN NIGHT

Mathematics staff and students showcased the McKinnon Magic with great pride in our annual Open Night which was held on Wednesday 8 May. Head of Maths, Bill Manolas spent a great deal of time making polyhedra to give away as prizes. A polyhedron is a 3D shape with many (more than 6) plane faces. No that's not 'plane' as in 'plain and boring', the polyhedra on display were anything but, 'plane' means flat or two dimensional. It's amazing the creative shapes that can be made using simple triangles, squares, hexagons and octagons. The collection of colourful polyhedra on display were of great interest to the parents and students visiting the school. Year 10 students, Karleen Han, Sarah Hatigan and Klaudija Zidonyte demonstrated how to construct some of the bigger and more challenging polyhedra while some of the visitors also tried making polyhedra themselves with tremendous enthusiasm and energy.

"Maths is my favourite subject" James, Year 6

"I think this [making polyhedron] is fun, I can’t wait to start high school" Jack, Year 6

"My favourite part of the day was making the paper polygons." Sarah, Year 10

It was great to see students inspired in this mathematical learning activity and we look forward to welcoming new students and parents into the McKinnon community next year!
