JUDO CHAMPION

Abigail Mayer (Year 7) competed in the Judo Senior Girls age group at the JVI Autumn Competition held on Sunday 5 May. She obtained a Gold Medal which is a great achievement and wish her continued success!

SARAH AARONS - AUSTRALIAN SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR

Sarah Aarons, who graduated from McKinnon in 2012, was crowned 'Australian Songwriter of the Year' at the recent APRA awards, along with winning three other awards: 'Most Played Australian Work' (The Middle), 'Dance Work of the Year' (The Middle) and 'Rock Work of the Year (Never Ever). The 'Songwriter of the Year' award "recognises a songwriter that has achieved the most impressive body of work in the previous 12 months." Sarah’s past 12 months have been nothing short of exceptional, with her writing songs for or with Camila Cabello, Galantis, Khalid, Dua Lipa, Lykke Li, Demi Lovato, Mabel, Peking Duk and Jessie Ware among others. 'The Middle' by Zedd and Maren Morris stands out as one of her biggest achievements to date, being nominated for three Grammy Awards.

This year's award ceremony was held at the Melbourne Town Hall on Tuesday 30 April. Sarah, who currently lives in Los Angeles, was in attendance. At last year's ceremony she won 'Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year' which shows just how successful this year has been for Sarah.

Sarah is also an incredible singer but prefers songwriting. She co-wrote and sang 'Never Ever' with The Rubens and performed the duet on stage to open the awards ceremony. This was a very rare performance.

RYTHMIC GYMNASTICS STATE TRIALS

After three successful Rhythmic Gymnastics State Trials, Francesca Poi of 8L has been selected to represent Victoria at the 2019 Australian Championships which will take place at Hisense Arena at the end of May.

Francesca was also crowned Junior Victorian Champion 2019 at the Rhythmic Gymnastics Victorian Championships in April this year.
