Update from Director of Whole School Numeracy and Mathematics

Dear Families, Students and Community Members,

In these disruptive and confusing circumstances, it is more important than ever that we support our students' learning and instil a positive mind set on development and growth of knowledge. We as the teachers do not expect you as the parent to teach, but to assist, guide and support our students with their learning.

Your Maths teachers (all teachers) are working feverishly in their homes to provide engaging and supportive learning activities to continue your child’s mathematical education. There are lots of innovative programs and activities on offer. Some examples of websites and programs your child might interact with are listed below:

For our students who excel in Maths in Years 7 & 8, the APSMO program will continue to run this year, although in a vastly different format. These students will be contacted shortly regarding how the competition will proceed. We are looking forward to some amazing results.

We congratulate all students on their conduct and work ethic this term – keep up the great work. To show our continued support of the home learning environment, the Maths Department will be offering snippets in the newsletter each fortnight – we hope you enjoy them.

Math Matters

Hands-up if you have ever muttered the words “Maths is hard” or “I was never good at maths”.

Numeracy capability is not inherited but attitudes are contagious.

As parents, you play a significant role in your child’s learning and development. Helping children to become numerate does not need a high level of mathematics knowledge but the right attitude to approach each new learning activity. Helping children to navigate the mathematics they encounter in their everyday world is the role of everyone.

The Maths Faculty would like to support you in as many ways as possible in helping your student navigate the world mathematically. Let us teach them the intricate skills - we ask you for your support with the everyday numeracy of their world.

“Math Matters” will be a series of hints, tricks and strategies that will focus on providing you, as a parent, ways to help build your child’s numeracy. Your child’s teachers and wider school community look forward to working with you and together we can build confidence in our students’ ability to use Maths.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Maths teacher or myself. For further information, you may like to access the following websites:

 Finally …

Why do plants hate Maths?

Because it gives them square roots!
