The ELC children have been learning about book making and were enthralled by guest speaker Mr Trevor Kline from Wakefield Press

Library News

As part of our Guided Inquiry units the ELC – Purple Room and the Year 4s have been looking at book making.  The ELC have been examining crucial elements of good picture books.  Character development was one element we studied.  We observed physical traits of a character as well as delving deeper into their personal qualities/values.  We used a rebus (a story which uses pictures to help tell the story) as a structure for our own story.

The Year 4s have been looking at the process from manuscript to published book.  We have explored the many roles/occupations involved in printing a book.  We explored an assortment of wordless picture books and questioned if they have authors or illustrations.  I challenged them to think about the author’s purpose in writing these books.  This proved difficult for some.  Upon sharing more, we decided that in fact wordless picture books are filled with a variety of messages for the reader, some are just for children while many also contain messages for adults.  During our unit, the boys were fascinated by picture books that had been banned in some countries.  This stimulated a discussion about censorship.

To conclude both of these units, Trevor Kline from Wakefield Press generously gave of his time to share his knowledge as a publisher.  He worked with our ELC children on creating their own story, highlighting the elements editors and publishers look for in books.  He talked explicitly about the publishing process with the year 4s.  Here are some of the boys’ reflections:

Mr Trevor Kline visited the year fours in the Primary Library today.  He is a publisher from Wakefield Press.  He told us about how to publish a book.  It is a long process.  A lot of paper is used but some of the paper is recycled.  There are a lot of corrections.  When you get the book ‘bound' it has to be stitched but it has to go to a proper book binding company interstate or possibly overseas. I really enjoyed listening to clever Trevor and I learned a lot about publishing. I might publish the book that I’m working on with my friends.

Mr Trevor Kline visited the year fours in the Primary Library today.  He is a publisher from Wakefield Press.  He explained to us that you have to use correct paper for images and if you are a new author you would have to be mentored by an old illustrator. He also told us why he wanted to be a publisher and what kind of books he publishes at Wakefield Press.  I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the binding process and publishing from Trevor.  It was interesting and informative.  Thank you for coming to the Primary Library Trevor Kline.

Book Week is approaching.  We will celebrate from 20 – 24  August.  This is a friendly reminder that we will be dressing up as our favourite book character this year.  There will be a parade on Friday 24 August.  More details will be provided as we approach the event, however, now might be an opportune time to start thinking about costumes.  Please note we would like the children to make or put together items from home in assembling their costumes.  We do not want families to buy or hire costumes.

In the Senior School we would like to remind any students changing subjects at the end of semester that all textbooks they no longer require must be returned to the library as soon as possible. If books are not returned students cannot borrow another textbook and will be invoiced early in Term 3.
