Basketball News

It is an important time for basketball as we near the end of this current season and will be starting to plan for new teams in the new HBA season beginning in Term Four. All current players and their parents should be having conversations and thinking about their intentions for the spring/summer season if they will be playing juniors and/or seniors. Forms have been sent out to students and need to be returned by Tuesday 9 August, at the latest.. Please note that for all junior divisions TOP AGE players will move up a division for the next season as per BVC regulations and age groups.

I can also announce that the current College basketball administration model as we know, it led by myself and Simone Brabham from the school, will be changing to a newly appointed “parent/community member” administrator in charge for 2023. This will be a paid position. If you are potentially interested and would like more information, please contact either Leigh Alexander or Andrew Hirst at the school ASAP.

Volleyball

Next Monday will see some friendly games of volleyball played after school in the Sports Centre with College versing Monivae College. This is a result of the great initiative of Year 12 student Ollie Ferguson who has sparked the “volleyball bug” amongst senior students in the recent months running training sessions and games every Friday lunchtime. Now it is time to put into practice in a competitive environment what they have learnt!! So, if you are interested in watching some volleyball in action come along this Monday 8 August from 4-5.30pm in the Sports Centre.

Cross-Country Report

On 26th  of July, a determined group of cross-country athletes made the long bus trip to Melbourne to compete at the ICCES cross country event at Bundoora Park. There were many strong schools from across the greater district ready to tackle the steep and muddy track.

College held their own throughout the day and performed very well across all age groups. We finished the six events with two standout performances from our senior placegetters. Toby Adamson placed 2nd in the senior boys 5km run with a time of 18.21, scraping at the heels of 1st place. Poppy Austin decimated the senior girls 3km run with a convincing 1st place victory in a time of 11.16 minutes. As a whole school, College finished with an overall tally of 539 points, coming in at 6th out of all the schools on the day.

Well done to all participants that ran throughout the day, putting in their best efforts and proudly representing the College. Thank you to Mr Alexander for his organisation to get a team together, and to our new Gapper, Zahria for coming along to marshal and helped out throughout the day.

Netball Championships Regional Tournament

On Wednesday 27 July, three eager Senior School teams headed to Pedrina Park for the Netball Victoria School Championships Regional Tournament. The tournament consisted of teams from Hamilton, Portland, and Horsham and College had a very successful day with the senior girls’ team winning all their games, moving on to the State Championships in Melbourne at the end of the month. The Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 teams also performed well, winning many games and improving throughout the course of the day.

The senior team coached by Miss Couchman, consisted of Year 11 and 12 students, with the addition of Chloe Frost and Bella O’Sullivan who played an enormous role in the success of the day. The girls played five games in total, Georgia Baker-Miller and Chloe Frost dominated in the goals, Chloe Jones and Zoe Hill worked well with Bella O’Sullivan to bring the ball down.

The Year 9/10 team, coached by Rochelle Morrison, played four games for the day winning 1 and losing 3. The girls played Monivae, Baimbridge, St Brigid’s and Bayview. There was some very tough competition, but the games were close and for many there wasn’t much between the final scores. The girls were competitive all day and they worked extremely hard to get turnovers and score quickly, gelling well together as a team.

The Year 7/8 team played seven games for the day against Bayview, Monivae, Baimbridge, Good Shepherd and St Brigid’s in Horsham.  Over the day they won 3, lost 3 and drew 1.  The girls never gave up and when on the court they gave it their all with some girls playing out of position during the day and to try different combinations.  The girls had been training hard for this and their dedication showed on the court over the course of the day.

Thanks to all the parents and supporters that came out to cheer for the girls over the day and also to our three fabulous umpires who gave up their time to help us out – Susie Holcombe, Mrs Outtram and Suse McClure.  A huge thank you to the coaches for the day Mrs Malseed, Miss Couchman and Rochelle Morrison, for all the work behind the scenes and on the day.
