Judging the CBCA Book of the Year.

Over Term 2 and Term 3, a small but dedicated group of readers in Years 7, 8 and 9 are gradually making their way through the Children’s Book Council Book of the Year Shortlist of the Older Reader and the Younger Reader categories.  There are 12 books in all and the students are doing a fantastic job reading and reviewing all the books.

These students write a short review of the books as they finish each one, and also give each book a star rating out of 5.

Before the winners are announced in August, this group will have its own vote on the books they think are the best, and their decision may be very different to the adult judges.

Well done girls! Your work effort is to be much admired.

Student Reviews

Rabbit, soldier, angel, thief  by Katrina Nannestad

Good book! You get to read about the life of a boy during war and how he builds relationships with soldiers and is known as an angel.  It’s a sweet book and will leave you in awe

I really enjoyed the book's storyline and the picture and little poem at the start of each section.  I also enjoyed the way of telling the story in ‘then and now’ times.

Tiger Daughter by Rebecca Lim

I really  enjoyed this book because you really get to see the truth of what immigrant families have to go through

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

A great book that talks a lot about racist issues and family problems.  There’s a lot of family bonding.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Tiger Daughter is a story full of heart and characters you’ll instantly be able to connect with.  It takes you on a journey with the protagonist, one of wading through cultural expectations and of self discovery.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

You can relate to this if you’re trying to find your voice, struggling to impress your parents and going through narrow moments. This story keeps you wondering what’s going to happen.

Terciel and Elinor by Garth Nix

Even while being a prequel, this book manages to be an intriguing introduction to that world for new readers.  The story remains fast paced between beats, and is perfect for readers looking to escape into a world full of magic, and instantly loveable characters.

Girls in Boys’ Cars by Felicity Castagna

I liked that the book had short chapters and an interesting plot line, but so much was happening, I don’t know if I kept up with it all.

A good book I enjoyed reading throughout the holidays.
