Friday 26 August - Friday Fun

On Friday 26 August students will engage in yarning circles. These are spaces to talk, share and build relationships and have been used in indigenous cultures for thousands of years. They will also participate in a Story Walk around the school. A Story Walk is a movement and literacy boosting activity that places an illustrated children’s book - taken apart and displayed page by page - along a walking route.

Creative Challenges

These optional creative challenges are open for students to do at home any time or during lunchtimes in the library in Book Week. Please bring them in before Thursday 24 August so we can display them for others to enjoy!

Challenge 1: Create an item inspired by this year's theme, "Dreaming with eyes open" or a book you have enjoyed. It could be a diorama, show-bag, poster, sculpture, model, artwork, hat, jewellery or a technology product! It could also be a performance - a song, dance or play that you film. It's up to you - so get creative!!

Challenge 2: Create a story about "Dreaming with eyes open"!

Challenge 3: Create a response of your choice to celebrate the pleasures and benefits of reading.

PYP Evaluation

We are looking forward to the opportunity during Week 5 to sharing our approach to the Primary Years Program with a team of IB specialists who will be undertaking an Evaluation of our International Baccalaureate Programs (Primary Years Program in Morris and Diploma Program in Clemes). This process occurs every 3-5 years and offers a very useful analysis of our teaching and learning programs, alongside any related policies, systems and procedures. More information about the IB can be found at Why the IB is different?

Kindergarten Earthcare Days Term 3: Our outdoor classroom in Lenah Valley

The Kindergarten children will continue to visit a site near the Lenah Valley Linea Park for their Earthcare Days in Term 3. We will be going every Thursday from Weeks 3-9 commencing Thursday 11 August. Our last excursion will be on Thursday 22 September.

We will be leaving school on a bus at 12.00pm and will return by 2.45 pm. The excursions are part of our Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry. The children are developing responsibility and resilience in a natural environment. It has been delightful to see how they are sharing their curiosity and confidence.

Please ensure that your child has a rubbish free lunch at Kindergarten, especially on Thursdays to help practise Earthcare and awareness about the impacts of soft plastic on the planet. This term, in order to maximise our time on site we will be leaving bags at school and will only be taking a snack and drink bottle to the site. Please make sure that your child comes to school with some of their rubbish free food packed in a separate container. We will put a tub out on our Earthcare days for your child to put their food into in the morning. Please support their independence with this.

Your child will need appropriate clothing for the forecasted weather and spare clothing packed for the excursions as we will be playing outdoors even when it is raining. The school has wet weather jackets and overpants that the children will wear if necessary, depending on the weather and how wet the environment will be.

This term we will be inviting up to two parent helpers to come along each day. More information will be emailed to families about this opportunity. Please contact the Kindergarten team if you have any questions about the Earthcare Days.

Absentees

If your child will be absent from school for the day please advise the Morris Office (phone: 6210 2228, or email: morrisadmin@friends.tas.edu.au) and the classroom teacher before 9.00am. We appreciate your support in this process.
