Education Week 2022 wrap up

Education week Primary public speaking competition

Congratulations to all the students that participated in the competition. Mr Stuart and Mr Rowley were presented with interesting speeches that looked at the future of education. It is important for students to play an active roll in the future of education. Lots of the students discussed teaching of real worlds skills like cooking and even fishing. Congratulations to Zac Reid, who was our runner up, and Joshua Jones the winner of this years competition. You both presented your speeches beautifully during the education week assembly. Just in case you missed them, here are the speeches written by the winner and runner up below:

On Monday, after the Education week Assembly, we held our Education Week family BBQ. Blessed with a warm Winter's day, over 40 family and community members gathered to enjoy a sausage sandwich to celebrate the beginning of Education Week 2022. It was lovely to have our school community in attendance, with many enjoying the chance to mingle with staff, students, and other families. The event set the scene for a fun and exciting week celebrating public education and Boorowa Central School.

NAIDOC Celebrations

Tuesday of Education Week was all about celebrating and learning more about our Indigenous culture. We welcomed Wiradjuri Echoes to our school again and we began our day with a whole school smoking ceremony to cleanse and refresh. Duncan spoke to all of us about the importance of learning about our culture, the world’s oldest culture, and being proud of who we are and our history. He talked about the need for understanding of all cultures across the world and encouraged all of us to find out more about culture as we travel, both in Australia and across the world.

Groups of students took part in smaller workshops throughout the day, where Duncan and Jakita used music for storytelling. We all loved hearing the different animal sounds from the didgeridoo and understanding the different symbols used in Indigenous drawings and artwork.

Students worked on Indigenous art and craft during the day, including dot paintings of boomerangs, spinning tops and Australian maps, weaving and storytelling drawings.

To finish off the day, our K-6 students and staff took part in a dance workshop. We were all painted up to represent kangaroos (boys and men) and berry gatherers (girls and women) and then learnt a hunting dance. Duncan spoke about respect between genders as we performed our movements, finishing off with the teachers dancing for the students! Lots of fun learning for all of us!

Years 3 -5 Maths Challenge

The first ever Primary Maths Challenge went off with a bang today in the 5/6 classroom. A brand new way of conducting a competition, the kids did a fantastic job of problem solving and writing out questions to gain an answer. Each question was timed which made it quite nerve-wracking! Well done to Maddyn, Dempsee, Charlotte, Bede, Roarke, Ty, Blayde, Sebastian, Ava, Caspian, Josh J and Zach for participating and giving their best.

Year 3/4 Champion: Roarke Franklin

Year 3/4 Runner-Up: Ty Gibbons

Year 5/6 Champion: Joshua Jones

Year 5/6 Runner Up: Zach Thompson

Book Day

Students from Kindergarten through to Year 12 dressed up as their favourite book characters on Thursday. We all enjoyed parading for parents and friends so they could see our amazing variety of costumes. We had characters from fiction and non-fiction books, including Harry Potter, Star Wars, Tiny Tim, The Magic Pudding, Bluey, Willy Wonka, The Rainbow Fish, 101 Dalmatians, Hairy Maclary, The Very Cranky Bear, Fancy Nancy, Sleeping beauty, Dorothy, The Twits, Spiderman and many more. There were lots of spies, football players, animal wranglers, princesses and a whole lot of dominoes who kept losing their spots. It was a fantastic day, and we were so pleased to see so many parents and friends joining us in our celebration of books.

Book Fair 2022

The Boorowa Central School Book Fair was once again a tremendously successful event thanks to the wonderful support of the Boorowa community. This year's theme, as set by the Children's Book Council of Australia, was 'Dreaming with Eyes Open.'

Congratulations and thanks to all who gave so much of their time and enthusiasm to help bring out the many smiles of those who visited the Book Fair.

Hearing the oohs and aahs and seeing the wide eyes of our Infants students was especially wonderful.

Short Story Creative Writing

The Creative Writing Competition was an absolute blast during Education Week at Boorowa Central. 21 students competed to win some exciting prizes - two $50 gift vouchers! After much deliberation from Mr Eldred and Ms Mahoney, two winners emerged - Bonny Bromham (Primary), and Amanda McCauley (Secondary).

Deciding the winners was tough as all students presented wonderful stories ranging from zombies to superheroes to magical kingdoms! We look forward to seeing more entries next year and the wonderful efforts of our students in crafting exciting worlds, mighty heroes, evil villains and enthralling plots. You can read the two winning stories in this newsletter!

Academic Challenge Day

Today saw the academic challenge between students and staff.

Students where in teams across year groups competing for glory as the top team. Year 12 had their own tables as did the Staff. The staff however where handicapped so that any specialty teachers could not answer questions in their area of excellence.

Eight rounds of challenging questions consisting of multiple choice and open-ended questions were given to the teams. They also faced an ongoing riddle and critical thinking task consisting of another 25 questions.

At the end of each round Year 12 and staff faced a challenge question.

After all the questions were answered and scores tallied it was a three-way tie so a tie braker was given resulting in the below decision.

Year 12 came out on top in the staff Vs Year 12 challenge.

Results are as follows 1st place - Team Australia: Alex Patyuk, Lilly Diskon, Georgia Finlayson, Angel Gorman – McKnight, Jordan Grimson, Nate Hirsch, Jacob Kennedy and Jesse Baker

2nd place - Team Ireland: Josh Karchinsky, Tyler Apps, Belle Riles, Charlotte Penrose, Tyler Sullivan, Shadae Crisp Zagar, Taylen Bolt and Tyler Dennett

3rd place - Team Argentina: Xavier Thompson, Aiden Newman, Dea Hirsch, Nicholas Wilson, Imogen Pye, Phillip Gordon and Chloe McClung.

All students are to be congratulated for their efforts with many progressing in their spelling levels.

Dempsee Coate (Yr3) was the overall winner and Caspian Franklin (Yr6) the runner-up.

Students Vs Staff Sport Challenge

What better way to conclude an amazing week of celebrations than to hold a Staff Vs Student sport challenge. Years 4-12 participated in a vigorous game of soccer.

A fun afternoon was had by all but it was the staff that claimed the day with two victories against primary students and a tie in the secondary match.

Well done to all participants
