Gap Year Programs
There are so many amazing opportunities for students looking to put a bit of time and distance between the end of their secondary schooling and the start of their next phase. Our College website is constantly being updated with new and exciting programs. The latest one is from the Department of Home Affairs.
University Open days
Now is the time to start planning your visits to University open days. Following is a list of dates that have been released so far. Some of these universities require pre-registration, so be sure to look at the website for all the details.
VTAC
The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) is the organisation who manage university and (some) TAFE offers. Every student in year 12 needs to open an account with VTAC, so they can submit their University preferences later in the year. Before students can open an account, they will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Applying for a USI is a quick and simple process. Go to: https://www.usi.gov.au/
Once you have a USI, you can apply for a VTAC account: https://delta.vtac.edu.au/registration/apply
Important VTAC dates are shown below.
Career planning and subject selection
The year 10 students participated in a careers workshop last week, hosted by the College Careers team. The students investigated how their interests, strengths and values can influence their career paths and also some of the factors that need to be considered when making their subject choices.
The next stage in the subject selection process is Subject Expo on Monday, July 31st in the Senior School building. In addition to all of our key learning areas, there will be representatives from AGA, MAS and Gipps TAFE. All of these organisations can speak to the VET programs they offer and support for students looking to follow a vocational pathway.
Year 10 Work Experience: A Remarkable Journey of Growth and Success - Mrs. Cassie Raschle
We are thrilled to share the incredible achievements of our Year 10 students during their recent Work Experience program. Over the past week, our students had the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the real world, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in various professional settings. We are proud to report that their performance has been exceptional, with students receiving rave reviews from employers and demonstrating remarkable personal and professional growth.
One recurring theme among the employer feedback was the exemplary conduct and presentation of our students. Employers consistently praised our students for their professionalism, noting that they presented themselves very well. It is heartening to hear that our students embraced the importance of first impressions and conducted themselves with confidence and grace. Politeness was another trait that stood out, as our students interacted respectfully with their colleagues, supervisors, and clients throughout their work placements.
Another commendable attribute displayed by our Year 10 students was their willingness to try new things. Employers were delighted to see our students stepping out of their comfort zones and embracing new challenges. Our students' openness to learning and eagerness to take on unfamiliar tasks impressed employers, who appreciated their positive attitude and adaptability. By readily adapting to new situations, our students have proven their flexibility and demonstrated the invaluable skill of navigating change.
Perhaps the most gratifying feedback came from an employer who stated that one of our students was the best they have ever had. This extraordinary recognition speaks volumes about the high calibre of our students. The employer commended the student's outstanding work ethic, reliability, and ability to surpass expectations.
Our students have expressed their enjoyment of the work they chose to experience, often discovering a passion for the tasks at hand. Many of them have indicated that their time spent in the workplace has solidified their interest in pursuing careers in the respective fields they explored. It is truly inspiring to witness our students' aspirations taking shape as they connect their classroom knowledge with real-world applications.
While our students have achieved remarkable success during their work experience, they have also identified areas for improvement. This has demonstrated their ability for self-reflection on their own performance as well as taking feedback from their employers on board.
The 2023 Year 10 Work Experience program has been a resounding success, allowing our students to grow personally and professionally. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the employers who graciously welcomed our students into their organisations and provided them with a transformative experience. We look forward to witnessing our students' continued growth as they carry the lessons learned during work experience into their academic and future professional pursuits.
Thank you to all the businesses who have supported our students in their Work Experience!
