Old Fashioned Dress-Up Day
On the last Tuesday of Term Two, as part of our current Unit of Inquiry, ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’, the Preps had an Old-Fashioned Dress Up Day. The children experienced what it was like to go to school in the olden days and wore old fashioned clothes such as long skirts, vests, shawls, braces and hats.
Prep A
They loved playing many old-fashioned games and activities throughout the day, such as writing on chalk boards in the old cursive font, playing with marbles, knuckles/jacks, snakes and ladders, and board games.
Prep B
We then went outside, and the Preps enjoyed skipping ropes, yo-yos, quoits and elastics. It was fun learning the old rhymes school children used to sing while playing elastics. Rolling hoops down the mounds is always a favourite!
Prep C
SMART Spelling
The Preps have come such a long way in a Semester of SMART Spelling!
They recognise that words are made up of letters and sounds and they can identify these within words. The Words of the Week we have covered so far are: cat, ant, tin, tap, sun, net, leg, bed, dog, jam, hand, frog, zip, yes, wax and this week vet.
Through studying these Words of the Week, the Preps have now learnt 25 letters (c, a, t, n, i, p, s, u, e, l, g, b, d, o, g, j, m, h, f, r, z, y, w, x and v) since the start of the year! We are continuing to revise the letters, sounds and Words and Sentences of the Week daily as part of our classroom learning.
Maths
Recently, the Preps have been exploring teen numbers in maths. We have considered all the places we have seen teen numbers, like on letterboxes or buses and around the classroom.
The Preps recognised that teen numbers are made up of 2 digits, and the first digit is always 1! They also noticed that we need two tens frames to count above 10 and we also need two sets of hands to make teen numbers. The Preps have had the opportunity to consider equations and how we represent addition in a number sentence.
The Preps have also been working really hard on writing their numbers 0 - 10 and words during our maths sessions. They also had a lot of fun finding their pair by matching the numbers 1 - 20 with their corresponding word and making teen numbers using unifix blocks.
The Preps have been having fun consolidating their maths skills in MathSeeds during our iPads sessions.
