Biomimicry

Students in years 1/2 have been introduced to the concept of Biomimicry - observing the way nature solves problems and thinking about how we can mimic those strategies to solve problems in our own lives.

Through the lens of "I wonder Why", we looked for functions in the natural world such as collects, protects, attaches, and wondered why nature behaves in that way.

Students were then invited to come up with their own inventions, based on the functions they found.

Fabulous Fungi

This week we are becoming mycologists as we investigate and discover the amazing world of Fungi!

Students have been discussing the roles that fungi play as decomposers, and learning about mycelial networks and their ability to help plants communicate. We discussed the life cycle of a mushroom, and the importance of proper identification as sometimes there are poisonous lookalikes.

Next term we will be growing oyster mushrooms and investigating the potential of mycelium Bio fabrication in the form of planter pots and paper.

Students have also been propagating succulents in preparation for the Arts Festival
