Overview of Literacy - Term One 2022
In Literacy this term, we have begun the InitiaLit-2 program which has allowed opportunity for increased rigour and personalised learning within Literacy.
InitiaLit–2 has four main components which are taught during the Literacy block in our daily learning program; Spelling, Reading comprehension and fluency, Grammar and Vocabulary.
Students have been learning about different text types and their features. We have so far explored imaginative texts and this week began looking at informative texts. Students particularly enjoyed reading the short imaginative story 'The Unhappy Dragon'.
Students have been enjoying choosing their own books to read independently from out Year Two library.
In Writing, we have begun experimenting with imaginative texts and we will continue to learn different types of writing styles including imaginative, persuasive and informative texts throughout the term. Students have begun looking at the features and structure of an imaginative text as they prepare to plan and publish their own picture story book. We have also been revising and practicing letter formations.
In Speaking and Listening, we have been providing many opportunities for students to build their confidence to speak in front of an audience as we conduct regular circle time in class. We have also been continuing to build on our students' self-awareness of how and why "talk moves" promote respectful classroom dialogue. As our school is now an Auslan school our "talk moves" are currently transitioning to Auslan sign language.
Crazy Hair and Sock Day
On Friday 3rd of March we celebrated out crazy hair and sock day. It was a great day and we all had so much fun. Thank you to Mr Kitch for the great disco on the stage at each recess.
Inquiry
As part of our inquiry unit this term we have cared for and grown food. We have learned the needs of plants to grow. Our lettuce plants have grown very big and we have taken them home to eat.
Take Home Readers
Take home readers have commenced. As part of InitiaLit-2, students have free-choice of short and extended chapter books to take home and read. Year Two students are able to choose up to four readers from school to take home and read nightly. Students in Year Two are also free to choose books from home to read each night if they wish. Students who choose their readers on a Monday are required to return them the following Monday. After reading, please record the name of the book in the InitiaLit Home Reading Diary for the day.
