ENGLISH in Term One

What a start to the year we have had in both Reading and Writing. With NAPLAN just around the corner (next week), we have all been working hard to ensure we touch on as many different skills as possible to spark our students memory, imagination and interest. All students have had experience with sitting a NAPLAN style test and answering questions which they will find.

Reading - Our class novel for Term One is Storm Boy, written by Colin Theile. An Australian classic set in the Coorong region, in South Australia. A novel built around respect, responsibility and resileince, it demonstrates all the qualities that we value at Upwey South. With rich language, descriptive and emotive phrases it is allowing our students to investigate reading comprehension strategies such as; predicting, summarising, finding the main idea, inferring and gathering key information.

Writing - Over the past 6 weeks our main focus has been on Exposition (Persuasive) and Imagination (Narrative) text types. These are the two options that the students will encounter in NAPLAN. We have revisited the text structure of both as well as spent focused lessons on how to build a confident and descriptive piece of writing. The structure of each can be seen in the posters below.

Linking in with Writing, we have covered the Grammar topics of Parts of Speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronouns, preposition, conjunctions, articles and interjections), Punctuation and Sentence structure.

Buddies

Our Friday Buddy  sessions have hit the ground running. All our Year Five students now have been assigned a buddy (or two) and weekly sessions have started. Each week two of our Year Five students run the lesson which involves reading a book and completing a learning task. What a great way to build strengths in Public Speaking and being positive role models. Here was have Jack E and Angus setting the task linked to the 'a' sound and decorating a yummy tasty apple. Well done to all the students who have lead one of these sessions. All students will have the opportunity to participate and lead one of these.

Student Leadership Positions in 2023

Congratulations to the group of Year Five and Six who have been successful in receiving a Leadership Position in 2023.  Please see the  below tables identifying the students and the positions they hold. We also acknowledge and congratulate all of our students who did not receive a position but put their best self out there and tried their best, well done!

We had so many wonderful applications written and presented that all students must be commended for their dedication and resilience.

John Monash Science School - Primary Schools Program

This Wednesday our students participated in their second JMSS program session and had fun investigating new topics.

Our Scientist learnt about ph levels and completed some chemical experiments. They sure did look the part in their lab coats and safety specs.

The Robogals learnt more movement and control coding of the EV3 robots and won a couple of races around the track. Well done girls for being persistent and working out how to successfully control these little robots.

Our Mathematicians or should I say code breakers, did a great job making and breaking codes using a 3 ring template code maker. They worked well together to solve the code and develop a top secret message.
