U14/1 Match Report

It came down to the top of the table clash in the MWJCA U14 Div 1 Grand Final with our St Pius X Green boys taking on minor premiers Wakehurst.  The venue was Oxford Falls with the outfield freshly cut and looking like a bowling green. Many experienced MWJCA leaders consider Oxford Falls the best synthetic pitch cricket ground in NSW.  Despite the dewy outfield skipper Zac Rapa won the toss and followed our recent model of bowling first.

Our spinners Alex Burke and Leo Boyd-Clark in particular lead the way and St Pius X had Wakehurst 3-50 at the half way mark.  Importantly the Wakehurst openers were both out and would not return.  In the second 15 overs our fielding and bowling began work hard against the pressure of a Grand Final, though we did not drop a catch and field placements were excellent.  At the start of the innings restricting Wakehurst to 7 – 128 would have been acceptable but we perhaps could have kept it closer to a chase of a little over 100.

Setting out on the run chase we knew  our experienced openers in Zac and Harry Arnold we due significant contributions.  And that is exactly what they delivered with an unbeaten opening stand at 15 overs that had St Pius X 0 – 67 and more than half way there with 2 retired batters in the bank.  After the break we looked to Darcy Horstead to continue his recent run of 50+ not out scores, but this was not to be and it was time for others to take the lead.  Will Asensio moved us on in partnership with Charlie Chippendale, and it would be Charlie who would take control.  As a flurry of wickets fell at the other end Charlie was calm. With Kamran Nadeem’s support from the non-strikers end Charlie finished it with an almighty six over cow corner that sent the St Pius X boys flying on to the field to celebrate. After handshakes and pictures it was off to the centre wicket for a rousing rendition of Woodchatta.

This was a serious competition with the top 6 teams all having a concentration of representative players.  An amazing Grand Final win by the team where our leading run scorer did not score a run and our leading wicket taker did not take a wicket. What an amazing team win the school should be proud of!

Wakehurst 7-128 from 30 overs.  St Pius X – Zac Rapa 2-18, Eddie Stearn 1-4, Will Asensio 1-5, Leo Boyd-Clark 1-9, Alex Burke 1-10, Jared Fernandes 1-32.  Catches Eddie, Will, Brodie Mendel, Jared and Charlie all 1 each.

St Pius X Green 6-131 in 28.3 overs. Charlie Chippendale 42 from 36 balls, Zac Rapa 32 from 52, Harry Arnold 23 from 39 and Will Asensio 12 from 25.

Thank you to Eamonn Burke for his management, the St Pius Cricket Committee, school staff and all other managers and coaches for their support (we had 19 boys play for the team across the season). And a massive thank you to the St Pius X Green parents for helping to make your son’s cricket experience so rewarding.

SPX U/13  Go PREMIERS!!!!

SPX Gold 7/155 def CPPC Energy 91

After a stellar season of winning 14 of the 16 regular season games, and finishing 2nd on the table by only 2 points, a grand final berth was exactly where this group of young men deserved to be.

The season saw the squad of 14 come together as a team and play a brand of cricket that each and every one of them should be very proud of. Everyone had their time in the sun and stood up when needed, a sign of a really good team and a sign of not wanting to let your mates down!

The boys arrived at the ground full of confidence, excited and just that little bit nervous. After winning the toss and electing to bat, they were into full swing. A solid 26 run opening partnership between Austin Judd and Josh Perry, really settled the nerves and put the pressure right on the opposition.

A retirement from Josh Perry (16*) then allowed the ever consistent Miles Moran (29) and Tom Costain (42*) to really stack on the runs. Then, hard selfless batting and running from the lower order really heaved the pressure on the opposition and a formidable score was set!

Pressure was put right CPPC by our openers in Max Barnett (3 overs 0-6) and Justin Mezza giving their hard hitting batsman nothing loose at all. Justin got the wickets flowing with a ball crashing into the pegs in his first over, finishing with 1-15 off his 3. Then 1st change specialist Ben Fieldus also sent the bails to Wales, with his trademark yorker, to finish with 3 overs 1-7 .

Partnerships started to build through the middle overs however with sensible, attacking batting and they were where they needed to be at the half way mark, being 2/75! However first ball after the break saw some luck come Pius’s way, with a good bit of foxing in the field by Xavier, fooling the batters to come back for a second on the arm of Matt Opie, which proved disastrous for them.

This wicket then certainly brought the nerves and the thought that runs needed to be quickly hit, which played into the hands of Harry Toms (1-8), whose line and length gave the batsmen nothing and was able to snare himself a timely wicket through the safe hands of the athletic Max Barnett!

However the real story of the day was just about to occur. After absolutely barbequing himself when batting, Matt Opie took the ball in hand and after 2 solid overs, turned the game on its head by taking a DOUBLE HATRICK to finish the game (3 overs 4-12) !! Yep, that’s right, 4 wickets in 4 balls! 2 clean bowled, a caught behind by Austin Judd and caught at a very clever short mid off by Josh Perry.

An amazing effort by Matt here. The excitement of the boys on the hattrick, and then the double hattrick to win the Premiership, is something we will all remember.

The boys put a lot of hard work into the season and not just the 10 that played the final. To Flynn and Archer, your contributions through the year and your and team first mentality were invaluable. Special mention goes to Will and Olly (now at different schools), who played the first half of the season, who came to support and watch the final!

Well done boys, you are PREMIERS!!!!!!!!

U13/Gold Coach

Senior Swimming

Last Wednesday the Senior Swimming squad competed at the ISA Carnival at SOPAC. The squad achieved outstanding results with the Senior Division coming third with only 9 points between them and first and St Pius managed to come 4th overall out of 9 schools which well and truly secures our place in Division 1 for next year. There were some spectacular performance with plenty of PBs and also an ISA record broken by Nicholas Gladen in his U17 50m backstroke swim. The ISA competition is an stepping stone to being able to swim at the next level at the CIS carnival. I am pleased to announce that Gavin Bae (Year 7), Luca McCarthy (Year 8), Nicholas Gladen (Year 11), Andrew Hill (Year 11), Evan Ausling (Year 12) and our Captain Aaron Lau (Year 12) will be representing the ISA at the CIS carnival held in May. Congratulations to the 2023 ISA representatives. More information will come out for those swimmers closer to the day of the carnival.

NSTA Tennis

What an amazing day we had for the finals and play offs last weekend. All boys showed excellent sportsmanship and great enthusiasm. Thank you to those boys who came to umpire and mentor our younger players: Lucas Halim, Izaac Tan, Lucas Youngman and Aidan Seifert. With 15 teams making the finals we ended with 10 of those teams placing first in their divisions.

Thank you also to the amazing teachers who have helped this season: Mrs Keighery, Mr Listo and Mrs Fileman. Your help has certainly made my job easier. Finally thank you to the parents for being both a taxi and a cheer squad for the boys.

Mrs Sam Iwatani - NSTA Convenor
