Science

Science Club

Last week in Science Club, we had over 35 students in attendance. Our students made density towers using different concentrations of sugar solution. They prepared three sugar solutions using 1-3 teaspoons of sugar and coloured them with food colouring plus a container of coloured water. They then carefully dropped the most dense (most concentrated) sugar solution in the base of a small measuring cylinder and then continued the layers with less dense solutions, finishing with water on top.

The Science:Why don't the varying colours of water mix? Given that the liquids have different densities (or weights) they stay separated.

Some groups had some impressive layers, whilst others added too much food colouring so the layers blended. Thank you to the many Year 11 and 12 Leaders (Science Guys) who lead their groups so well.
