Year 2

Ms Gililand, Mr Rowley, Ms Michetti and Ms Kay

It has been a busy few weeks in Year 2 as we close in on the end of a fabulous Term 1. Here are just some of the many things we have been doing recently.

Reading

For Reading, we have utilised the Little Learners Love Literacy Program to focus on ensuring we understand some of the more complex graphemes, phonemes and other letter combinations. We have looked at ‘sh’, ‘ch’ and ‘tch’ among others as we focus on reading the appropriate books, practice handwriting and learn new words with the grapheme/phoneme we are discussing. Here is an example of 2B’s silly story using the ‘sh’ phoneme.

Writing

We have been getting so much out of our writing sessions. We have been focusing on using our Writer’s Notebook as a method to build our vocabulary, including adjectives and verbs. With this knowledge, we have been delving deeply into narrative writing, including building characters, setting, wants, problems and solutions. Rather than simple sentences, we have used our understanding to create detailed characters and settings that make our writing more interesting and more fun. Here are some anchor charts that were created to remind us when we are building characters and settings that we need to describe them.

Maths

These past few weeks we have been consolidating our knowledge of Place Value, including working on ordering numbers - usually from smallest to largest - as well as breaking down the numbers to understand the value of each digit and how they relate to one another. We are moving forward in Numeracy by exploring 2D shapes as well as data. Here is an example of one of our hard working sessions.

Community Unit

Ou topic has been “Community” and we have been delving deeply into our cultures and customs, looking at things like our cultural foods, clothes and celebrations. We have learned so much about each other this term and can’t wait to see how we move forward into different topics next term.

Harmony Day

On the 21st  March, we celebrated Harmony Day at Gilgai Plains Primary School. We participated in a number of fun activities which included crafting Harmony Day crowns, a craft of ourselves and our cultures for a school-wide community display. We also graphed the languages spoken in our classes and learned more about different cultures within our classroom. It was such a fun and exciting day. Thank you to all parents and carers for your support in order to make the day a memorable one.
