Year 10 Surf Camp

As part of the Year 10 Outdoor Education program, students participated in the Lorne Surf Camp. This adventure-based program allowed the students to be self-sufficient for three days and two nights, camping at the Lorne Foreshore Caravan Park and cooking their meals on Trangia’s.

We departed on Tuesday 21 March and stopped at the Australian National Surf Museum in Torquay on our trip down, discovering the history of surfing and learning about the technological improvements over time. Lunch was at the iconic Bells Beach, before heading along the Great Ocean Road to Lorne, setting up our tents and creating our camp for the next two nights.

We were lucky to have a ranger from the Great Ocean Road Parks Authority introduce us to the native flora and fauna that this beautiful landscape had to offer and then began preparations for our first night’s dinner. On Day two, we started the morning with a surf lesson, cooked a hot breakfast and then headed to the Live Wire Park to surf amongst the trees and enjoy the beautiful scenery provided by the forest surrounding us! Day three started with a walk along the pier before we began the task of packing up our tents and heading back to MGSC.

This trip developed our resilience, along with our appreciation and gratitude for the comforts we are lucky to have at home. We worked together as a team, cooked amazing meals in our Trangia’s and had a great time trying new activities. What an experience! Something we will remember forever.

Year 9 Kayaking

Miss McConachy’s Year 9 Outdoor Education class completed their Kayaking excursion in Port Phillip Bay. Students practiced their paddling techniques as well as how to read weather charts and understand the use of safety devices such as a Personal Floatation Device. Students also developed the ability to read wave heights and wind speed. It was a perfect day out on the bay with the sun shining and students smiling.

Year 9 Trangia stove practice

In Year 9 Outdoor Education, students have been preparing for their Camp in Term 2 in the Alpine Region. Students have been learning how to safely use Trangia Stoves for cooking in class whilst also meal planning. Students were able to practice their theory skills learnt in class experientially by boiling water for the first time to make hot chocolates and teas. It was a successful lesson, well done to all students.
