St John's School Grown Tomatoes
St John's School Grown Tomatoes

Our wicking beds have been working well and producing our first crops of vegetables. We’ve had lettuce and zucchinis growing and now our tomato crop is ready!

On Wednesday the Environment Leaders will be out in front of the school ready to sell our organically grown tomatoes to you. Please bring some gold coins and a bag to take your goodies home in. They really are quite delicious!

Guess the weight of the Zucchini

This enormous zucchini came from our wicking beds and weighed a massive 1.75kg.

Congratulations to Harmony in Year 6 who won the competition. Imagine how much zucchini slice she can make with that!

Clean Up Australia Day for Schools

On Friday, 3 March, the whole school participated in Clean Up Australia Day for Schools. Each class was given an area to clean up and when we finished we had the rubbish we collected weighed and photographed. The weight of rubbish classes found ranged from 110 grams to 640 grams but the amount found varied depending on whether students found mostly paper and plastic wrappers or heavier items like cardboard containers, cans and hard plastic. All together we found 2.7 kilograms of rubbish in our school grounds!

We are now asking that no wrappers are brought to school to hep reduce our waste even more!

We will compare our results at the next challenge and we hope to see a big improvement in how Waste Wise we are!

Wonder Recycling Rewards Program

The Wonder Recycling Rewards Program is returning with a new recycling partner APR Plastics. For the remainder of this term and all of term 2 St John’s will be participating in the program, so start saving your bread bags. The rule of thumb is that if it has contained bread of some sort and is a soft plastic, then it’s a bread bag. If it hasn’t contained bread, then it’s not a bread bag. Bread bags should be as free from crumbs as they can be to keep the recycling process free from contamination (there is no need to wash them).

There is a box in the office area to deposit your clean bread bags. Please do not put anything else in this box other than plastic bread bags. The more bags we collect the more credits we receive to redeem free sports equipment for our school.

More information will be coming soon.
