Pivot Survey: Student Wellbeing for Learning
Student wellbeing, and the support of positive wellbeing trends and strategies in our students, is imperative in maximising learning outcomes.
One of the strategies to support wellbeing that has been implemented this year in our classrooms is the Student Wellbeing for Learning survey. This platform allows us to measure, track and support wellbeing so that our students are best equipped to learn.
Research has shown a correlation between wellbeing, mental health, social and emotional skills and academic learning for students. Pivot Professional Learning has collaborated with wellbeing, education and mental health experts to identify the key components of wellbeing and the impact these have on a student’s ability to learn at school.
Term 1 has seen us focus on generating baseline wellbeing data sets from our student cohort; this has enabled us to identify clear trends in the student body that allow for the targeting of wellbeing support to best suit the current needs of all students.
The data generated highlighted a number of perceived wellbeing strengths amongst our students, and also some areas where there were definitive trends that give scope for further support of our students.
Areas to celebrate include responses to the following statements:
- I have friends at this school I can trust.
- I feel safe online from bullying.
- My school is a safe place for me.
Areas that have been highlighted as those where more support is required are centred around the foci of resilience and the ability to problem solve. These are specified through the response to the following statements:
- I bounce back quickly after something bad happens.
- I believe things will work out for the best.
- I ask for help when I need it.
Moving into Term 2 students now undertake a weekly check in process across a five week block where they respond to prompts across five components:
- General Wellbeing
- Resilience
- Belonging
- Safety
- Protective behaviours
This quick and easy weekly check in is based upon leading research in the field of supporting student wellbeing in schools. Staff professional learning and reading will be focusing upon the key trends highlighted in our data and the most effective ways to utilise wellbeing resources to target the needs of our students.
Please see the below infographic which provides greater clarity and depth about the platform being used and the rationale behind this school improvement aim.
