Pope John Paul II Visit to Tasmania

In 1986 Pope John Paul II came to Tasmania for a whirlwind seven-hour trip.  He held a mass at Elwick Racecourse and was seen by about 35000 people during his trip.    This photo shows students from John Paul II Catholic School greeting the Pontiff when he arrived at Hobart airport.

John Paul II - 40 Years Poem

Forty years have come and gone,

Since John Paul II Catholic School was born,

With a mission to educate and guide,

To bring out the best in each student inside.

A place where children learn and grow,

Where knowledge and faith are sure to flow,

With a community that's strong and true,

Built on values that are old and new.

The halls are filled with laughter and song,

As students learn right from wrong,

With teachers who guide with care,

And a staff who are always there.

"Be not afraid," Pope John Paul II did say,

"For the Lord is always with you, night and day."

With these words, students find their way,

And the truth of faith, they'll never betray.

For forty years this school has thrived,

Fostering learning and helping students to survive,

In a world that's constantly changing and fast,

But the love and guidance here is built to last.

"Do not abandon yourselves to despair,"

Pope John Paul II's words, we'll repair,

"We are the Easter people, and hallelujah is our song."

With faith and hope, we'll march along.

So let us celebrate this milestone bright,

With a heart full of pride and delight,

For John Paul II Catholic School,

Is a place that's truly cool.

Here's to forty more years of growth,

With the children who'll carry forth,

The legacy of this school so dear,

And bring it to the future year by year.
