2015 Year 10 Work Experience
We are gearing up for another big year of Work Experience in 2015, with all 2014 Year 9 students about to receive their Work Experience pack (as part of the Year 10 Parent Pack).
Work Experience Week will be held during the last week of Term 2 (22 – 26 June 2015). All Victorian government schools who have Work Experience programs, along with many private schools, run their programs during this week, so finding a suitable placement can be competitive. Work Experience Arrangement and Travel forms are due by Friday, 6 March 2015, but it will be far easier for students to secure a placement if they make arrangements well prior to this date. While it is important for students to take the lead in this endeavour, we ask parents to please assist your student in determining a suitable workplace and approaching relevant employers. Students will undertake their first OH&S training module during Early Commencement to get them started on their Work Experience journey.
New this year is the Work Experience Portal page which provides all the information needed to organise your placement. The page can be accessed via the Student Portal: Home>Resource Centres>Year 10 Work Experience.
A Year 10 Work Experience assembly will be held on Monday, 1 December during Period 6 to provide students with further information. The JRC Work Experience team will be available for additional Work Experience support during recess and lunchtimes.

Changes to Australian Student Tax File Number Applications
As of 1 January 2015, the ATO will be changing the way students can apply for their Tax File Numbers. From this date, students will need to go to the ATO website and apply online. They will then have to arrange to have their ID confirmed through any Australia Post outlet.
As the ATO will not process any applications after 31 December, 2014, Frankston High School will no longer be able to send applications in on behalf of students. Therefore, we will not be accepting any applications after Thursday, 11 December 2014.
National Young Leaders Day
On 10 November, 21 SLC students ventured to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre to attend the National Young Leaders Day.
The day consisted of a series of motivational speakers and various expos. There were three main speakers for the day. Dr Jessica Gallagher, a paralympian and osteopath, who spoke passionately about her journey as an Olympic skier and track and field athlete with only 7% vision. Next was Ian 'Dicko' Dickson, a record producer, a host and media personality. He discussed his personal ups and downs and the main reasons to never fear failure. Finally there was Miss Jessica Watson, who held the title of youngest person to sail solo around the world. She was also awarded Young Australian of the Year in 2011. Jessica spoke about her adventure and how being in the background doesn't mean that you can't be an influential leader.
The day concluded with a panel of young entrepreneurs who all spoke about their hopes and dreams and how they're making such a difference at such a young age. The day was enjoyed by all with opportunities to speak with volunteers from many universities, police and defence forces, as well as life changing organisations. It was a wonderful day and we're sure to return in 2015!

Long Lazy Lunch
Frankston High School once again took centre stage in another fantastic event on 16 November.
Frankston High School Stage Band took part in the 2nd annual Frankston ‘Long Lazy Lunch’, an initiative developed by local business and community interests, which was held at Mornington Racecourse. Over 550 people attended this gala event, that helped to promote the City of Frankston and all it has to offer the wider Melbourne and Victorian community, and highlighting business, tourism, education and training opportunities.
Frankston High School Stage Bands and an Alumni Superband, ex-Frankston High School students who are now professional musicians, featured in this event, performing with the world famous James Morrison. Both bands wowed the enthralled audience, with everyone looking forward to an even bigger event in 2015.
I am very proud of the way the Frankston High School community has supported this event and congratulate the 40 students who took part. It was a memorable experience for all, and it was an exhilarating experience playing with James.

Breakfast Club
At the beginning of 2014, Frankston High School was given the opportunity to expand our Breakfast Club after receiving the very generous donation of $10,000 from the Commonwealth Bank.
The grant was given to us for the specific purpose of seeing our Breakfast Club expand, and that is exactly what it did! From its humble beginnings of four volunteers and 2 days a week on the 7-10 Campus, the Breakfast Club now runs 5 days a week on both the 7-10 and Senior Campuses. This massive operation is run by 17 volunteers, all of whom are wonderful, caring teachers already working at Frankston High School. The grant has not only enabled us to offer this service to students on a consistent basis, but has also meant we can offer students a variety of nutritious options such as cheese toasties, cereal, Milo and fresh fruit.
As well as serving the school in such a practical way, Breakfast Club has also provided a great opportunity to develop positive relationships between students and teachers outside of the classroom environment and encourage friendships between staff who may not have otherwise connected.
Special thanks go to the Norman Avenue Bakery and Brumby's Bakery Towerhill for their generous support during 2014.

Term 4 Casual Dress Day
On Friday, 21 November, the SLC held the Term 4 Casual Dress Day – raising money for Frankston High School Solar Panels! This charity was decided by the student body and teachers of Frankston High School through an online survey. Solar Panels were the most popular option, and the money raised will definitely be a huge help in the developing sustainability of our school. Without the Senior Students around to help, Frankston High School raised a massive $1,334.35, with Middle School raising only $28.20 more than the Junior School!
The bake sale raised $235.15 from the delicious treats the SLC students made. This was a huge effort from everyone in the school, especially 7H and 8H, who raised the most money respectively of all the junior classes. Well done to everyone who donated on the day!

Great Victorian Bike Ride 2014
On Saturday morning the group left Frankston High, amidst the craziness of the election voting and made our way to Albury to begin our nine day adventure. Sunday morning saw us ride 67km in over 30 degree heat to Yackandandah. What an amazing little town with beautiful scenery and quaint little shops scattered throughout. The students rode extremely well and as usual, all of the teachers and parents were inundated with praise from the community and riders about how well behaved and polite our students are. It made us all very proud and was a fantastic way to start this journey.
On Sunday, we rode 88km from Yackandandah to Bright. For those who know Tawonga Gap, the students scaled the very long and slow 7km hill climb in the heat of the day, and for many unfortunate ones, a very slow and very wet one with golf ball size hailstones on the decent down to Bright. Despite most students being totally spent and very cold and wet, all were so happy that they can say that they rode Tawonga Gap.
