AROUND THE COLLEGE

A WEALTH OF HEALTH SHARED WITH STUDENTS - DR CAMERON WOLFE

Year 11 and 12 students from VCE Biology and Health and Human Development classes were a captive audience last week when past St Joseph's College student and 1993 College Captain Dr Cameron Wolfe delivered a lecture on infectious diseases and public health.

Dr Wolfe is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University in North Carolina, where he has worked since 2009.  His specialises in infectious diseases and medicine. When not treating patients in hospital or working in laboratory environments, Dr Wolfe is travelling with teams to combat some of the world's biggest health epidemics such as Ebola and Zika Virus outbreaks.

The interactive discussion had students intrigued and Iman Westhead said the "session was a great way to contextualise classroom theory with real world situations".

When asked about the importance of speaking in schools, Dr Wolfe said "from a public health perspective, it's about sharing the importance of prevention" and "sharing the knowledge about work I enjoy".

We thank Dr Cameron Wolfe for his time spent at our College, before he set off to Sydney to do a lecture on organ transplant at St Vincent's Hospital.

VCE EXAM PREPARATION CONCERT

It has been a tough couple of weeks in our community and the show of support for Tuesday night’s concert was fantastic. It was great to sit back and relax and hear the great talent on display and forget the world for a moment.

The compact but appreciative, audience were treated to a fantastic night of talent including live performances from our Unit 2 and Unit 4 VCE Music Performance students. Jack Morrish and Soane Fatai entertained the crowd for the first half by performing contemporary repertoire from their personal sets including guitar/vocal, piano vocal, solo guitar and use of technologies such as looping stations. The boys also performed pieces to satisfy the requirements for their studies for Unit 2.

Nicholas Fasso-Opie, our Unit 4 Music Performance student was the star of the show as he performed his entire exam repertoire on solo Trumpet accompanied by the talented Catherine Hall on Piano-Forte. This is the first time we had heard Nicholas’ exam set in full and he did a wonderful job with great accolades and positive comments all round. We wish Nicholas all the best when he ventures to Ivanhoe Girls Grammar in late October to perform his exam in front of industry professionals and examiners. The concert was certainly good preparation for this!

Thank you to Matthew Mandica, Joelene Circosta, Sophie Cook, Brownyn and Ron Burt, Des Tobin, Sandra Tiver and the canteen staff, Marg Blythman and the leadership team, friends and family for their assistance on the night and to everyone else who came out on a weeknight in support of the music program and students.

FATHER'S DAY CELEBRATIONS

The Father's Day breakfast was a great example of our very strong St Joseph's College community. Guests were treated to a hot buffet breakfast on arrival prepared by our Certificate II in Kitchen Operations students.

Guest speaker Richard Stubbs entertained the full house, speaking about fatherhood and the roles and responsibilities that come with that job. Richard also touched on the complexities that lie within relationships and the opportunity to "opt in" wherever possible and the importance of being an active parent.

We thank Richard for coming and speaking at our Annual Father's Day Breakfast and hope that there were some great conversation points for everyone to takeaway.

Thank you to all the fathers, children, grandfathers, uncles and staff members for showing your support.

MRSBP SPONSOR BREAKFAST

This morning St Joseph’s College hosted the second annual Mildura Region Schools Breakfast Partnership sponsors breakfast. This is an excellent opportunity to recognise the efforts of all schools including St Joseph’s College on providing breakfast to students across the region.

It is also an opportunity to thank our major sponsors without whom the program would not be able to subsidise school breakfasts. Thank you to Powercor, Bank Australia, Devillees, Mildura Lions Club, Woolworths Langtree and Centro for your sponsorship and continued support of such a worthwhile program. I would also like to thank Mrs Marg Blythman for generously hosting this event and the Riverside TTC Hospitality students for catering the event.
