PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

St Joseph’s College’s core values and the Mercy Tradition’s commitment to spreading Christ’s love set a foundation for inclusion in all aspects of College life.

But education was not always as inclusive as it is today. Students with special needs were often ignored or separated into special education classes which may not have prepared them adequately for life after school. Thankfully, that is largely a thing of the past. However, bias in the classroom and strategies to combat it remain important topics for schools.

In our classrooms, students at all levels of ability learn together in a positive and supportive environment. Some students require extra challenges to keep them engaged. Other students need various types of learning assistance to help them succeed. The Learning Enhancement Team, led by Mrs Melanie Saleta, ensure that all students have the tools they need to learn.

“Everyone can learn,” Mrs Saleta explains. “Not always at the same pace or with the same methods, but we should all progress through life with more knowledge today than we had yesterday.”

Together with parents and teachers, the Learning Enhancement Team has created over 90 personal learning plans for students with varying needs across the College. Mrs Saleta and her team continue to monitor the learning plans and collaborate with teachers, parents and students to make any adaptations.

Our Learning Enhancement Team further empowers St Joseph’s College to fulfil our commitment to the development of every student as a whole person. Learning together is an integral step to living together in God’s world.

God Bless,

Mrs Marg Blythman
