Lyndhurst Academy

2019 Academy

Since the start of Term one, students have enjoyed their Academy choices every Wednesday. We have followed students, visiting their classes each week and here is a preview of some of their experiences and activities they have had the opportunity to take part in.

Coding club

On Wednesday 6th March, the coding club attended Quantum, in the city. Students attended a day covering Cyber safety.  We live in a world where data, both personal and confidential, can potentially be accessed by anyone. Raising an awareness of the importance of mitigating risks associated with the management of data to students, teachers and the wider community, is imperative.

The purpose of the day was to:

  • Create an awareness amongst students of the potential risks associated with their online activities.
  • Generate interest with students about the opportunities in the cyber security landscape.
  • Engage students in real-life Cyber Security Scenarios.
  • Equip students with the skills needed to be active participants in the cyber workforce.
  • Raise an awareness of the importance of cyber security education.
  • Inspire enthusiasm about career opportunities in STEM-related areas with all students.

Students were given a number of scenarios that they needed to work through.

In the first scenario, students assumed the role of a cyber-security officer as they conducted an investigation to determine who was stealing data from the newly established social media start up, QuickVox.

Students use this information to build a profile on the QuickVox employees under investigation, to determine which employee had compromised their data.

In the second scenario, students assumed the role of a cyber-security expert as they investigated and followed the trail of the person responsible for credit card fraud.

Each investigation built students skill set in; lateral and critical thinking, deduction, pattern recognition, data analysis and problem solving, essential skills for the 21st Century workplace.

The students had a great day.

Rugby

Students in the Rugby Academy were given the opportunity to undertake a refereeing course with NRL Victoria and Melbourne Storm Rugby Club.

Students were also fortunate enough to play in a schools tournament this week. Well Done to Rugby Academy students  who attended the event on Monday at Fregon Reserve in Clayton. All students performed exceptionally, a special Congratulations must go to our girls 9's team who won their group.
