Poverty Day
Poverty Day is an opportunity to encourage students to think about others who live in challenging material conditions in the third world and to do something about it. The emphasis is on celebrating how poor communities are able to tackle their problems in creative and affirming ways. We will focus on recycling and reusing.
What's planned?
The Secondary school will be having a Free Dress day this Friday, and there are some special conditions we would like you to be aware of:
Dressing down - this is a non-uniform day where students are encouraged to dress in a very basic way and thus demonstrate solidarity with disadvantaged people. All students not in in uniform need to bring a gold coin donation which will go towards our Compassion child sponsorship commitment.
Op-shop - students are bring in unwanted clothing to swap or sell for a gold coin. All monies will go towards our Compassion child sponsorship commitment.
Bottle cap challenge - the house with the highest tally of bottle caps will be declared the winner and each house member will receive a Freddo.
Tibetan “sand” painting - a large scale picture will be created on the concrete area in front of the canteen using the bottle caps. This will remain in place for the duration of the day.
Shack building contest - each house will collect suitable materials for building a shack. Shacks will be built during the house lesson in the quad and judged during lunchtime.
Giant chess set - we will make a “giant chess set” out of plastic soft drink bottles, highlighting the possibilities with recycling.
We will take lots of photographs of the day as it unfolds. It's going to be great.
NAPLAN Preparation
NAPLAN is fast approaching, and all students in Years 3, 5 , 7 and 9 have received a parent information sheet that outlines the process involved. If that somehow didn't make its way into the hands of parents, you can discover the required information at www.nap.edu.au
NAPLAN will be completed online at Cornerstone this year.
The hottest volunteer ticket in town!
Parents do you have a few minutes to spare? The library needs your help. We need help putting books back on the shelves each week. If you have a few minutes before you fetch your child or after you drop them off we can use you. Please contact Theresa Maptone at library@cornerstone.education
Music Matters!
Some special musical notifications
Mrs Johnson put the above together, and we are grateful for her contribution ... and it is a good time for us to make a bit of a fuss of Mrs Johnson and the amazing opportunity she has been given to travel to Adelaide, and come back with skills that will be sought after across the state. We are so proud of her, and can't wait to benefit from the experience she has coming up. Wonderful!
Cornerstone's on the Tour Circuit!
Cornerstone has two teachers, Bek Reid and Lara Clark, who are presenting at the prestigious 2019 Reggio Emilia Information Exchange Biennial conference in July. They will be sharing their findings from a project they undertook last year. In addition to this, the College will be part of the pre-conference tour that encourages participants to get out and see for themselves what is unfolding on the ground - and we have been named as being one of the places to visit. So, not only are we sharing our professional experience and outcomes with other educators, but they plan to actually visit us too! Something to be proud of as a school for sure!
Australian Reading Relay starting at Cornerstone
On Tuesday, VIPs, media and students from Cornerstone will launch a Nationwide event - the Reading Relay. A book will be created as it travels around the country, with each school it visits having the opportunity for a student to sign a page as a marker of its journey. Cornerstone Dunsborough has been selected to be the very first page, and we are delighted that Saxon Trigwell is going to sign it for us. Saxon's selection is particularly relevant, as he has a condition called Verbal Dispraxia, which makes his participation very meaningful.
Barney the owl is the mascot that hatched from the egg in Paint the Cape REaD. He will be in attendance, as will politicians, interstate guests and YOU! All welcome to attend. It's on Tuesday morning. The details are shown below.
Dental Screening Reminder
A reminder to all parents whose children recently were part of the Dental Screening Program, to please complete and submit your questionaire forms as soon as possible. The report from the visit will be distributed shortly, and the information on the forms is required to complete that process.
Thank you!
