Melbourne High / Macrob Challenge
Our annual Melbourne High/Macrob challenge was held on Thursday 19 July at Melbourne High. With both AFL football teams eager to bring the cups back to Aitken, we went in with a positive focus.
Our soccer boys, who were coached by Mr Patchell and Mr Eleftheriou, started off with great enthusiasm to instigate a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, a late goal by Melbourne High had the boys taking a draw for the day. Well done to the boys for putting up a great effort.
Our senior girls AFL football team was looking strong. Coached by Mrs Pocervina and Miss Crole, our girls started with a quick goal to take the lead. This was a special moment as this was the first time in 8 years our girls were winning against a strong Macrob girls team. Our lead continued into quarter time and Macrob were still not on the board! Slowly but surely our lead became greater. With great efforts by our ruck, Taya O and our onballer Mikayla B, our luck of actually winning the challenge looked achievable! After a positive and loud speech by the coaches, our girls went out with confidence and were ready to increase their lead. Sensational goals by our centre half forward Grace G increased the lead; nothing was going to stop Grace! Kiara D also proved to be a positive influence for the team, securing many touches and assists. Mikayla P was a silent but effective tackler and this also stopped the Macrob girls from achieving the dream that was just about to happen for the Aitken girls! The end of the 4th quarter was near and I waited on the boundary with our bench in anticipation for the siren to go and to run out as winners for the first time in 8 years! Was I happy? That is an understatement!
Well done girls for an awesome effort and securing our first win against Macrob. Well done to our inspiring captains: Mikayla B and Grace G who showed their desire to the rest of the girls to fight hard and to “put in”. Well done to Mikayla B who received “best on ground “ and showed that she is an “AFLW” in the making…
Our AFL boys team started off with a convincing goal. Coached by Mr Mackrell and Mr Taylor, they came in with confidence. At half time, our boys were down in goals but not in spirit. They had to lift and that is what they did in the third quarter. Their fortune was in luck when Melbourne High were actually playing with an extra player on the ground so their score was reverted to 0! Even though the Aitken AFL boys team had an advantage of Melbourne High’s score going back to 0, they would still have won by 7 points if the scores had not changed. Well done boys!
It was a great day and I would like to thank all the coaches, managers and helpers. Looking forward to next year’s challenge which will be held at Aitken College.
