Foundation Miss Bennett

Another super-star two weeks have passed in Foundation and our following of routines and completion of learning tasks are making Miss Bennett and Abby very impressed!!

We have been starting our day with a morning song, changing the class calendar and then getting straight into our daily review and learning about letter names and sounds. During our 'Daily Review' the Foundation students have been practicing their pre-writing patterns to help them get better at controlling the pencil and using a correct 'crocodile snap' pencil grip.

In maths, the Foundation students have also been learning all about shapes. Especially the difference between a square and a rectangle as well as the sides and corners a shape has. This week, they have made their own shape monster to solidify this learning.

We have also begun talking about the importance of daily prayer and 'how we can talk to God'. To help us understand the expectations of a prayer circle the students put their handprint on a prayer mat to help with staying respectful and getting ourselves ready for a moment of reflection and prayer.

During our Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships we have been learning about stress and we have been introduced to 'Wibbly'. In last week's lesson we learnt about coping strategies, what we can do when we are feeling frightened, angry or sad. On our balloon we recorded our favourite coping strategy. Here are some of our responses:

- telling a joke

- dancing

- painting or drawing

- watching my favourite show

- riding my bike

- playing with my favourite toy

During our phonics lessons we have been learning about some digraphs (two letters making one sound) and trigraphs (three letters making one sound). Over the past two weeks we have learnt about 'ck', 'ch' and 'tch'. After each lesson we have been applying our learning as you can see in the pictures we were busy cutting and pasting the different 'tch' words.

Lastly we would love to share what we have been doing in some of our Inquiry lessons. This week we learnt about behaviours that were kind and some that might be unkind. We then explored different ways of being kind through: giving, helping or a small act. We also looked at when it is easy to be kind and sometimes when it is tricky to be kind.

This week in 1-2JH we have been learning about Gratitude. As a class we came up with a definition of what gratitude is after watching The Resilience Project videos.

We believe that Gratitude is focusing on what you do have and not worrying about what you don’t have.

Here are some of things that the Grade 1-2’s are grateful for:

‘I am grateful for my cat because he snuggles me.’ - Stevie

‘I am grateful for my brother because I care about him and he cares about me.’ - Liam

‘I am grateful for my family because they look after me and love me.’ - Francis

‘I am grateful for my dog because I get to play with her.’

‘I am grateful for Ash Wednesday.’ - Edith

‘I am grateful for my birthday coming up.’ - Addie

‘I am grateful for being able to do lots of activities.’ - Marla

‘I am grateful for my sushi for lunch.’ - Ben

‘I am grateful for being able to go to school.’ - Will

‘I am grateful for my home.’ - Jaxon

‘I am grateful for my home because it keeps me safe.’ - Tom

‘I am grateful for being friends with Arabella because she is very friendly.’ - Oonagh

‘I am grateful for the church because we get to go there when we say prayer.’ - Maddie

‘I am grateful for my sticker book because it has lots of stickers.’ - Zara

Grade 3-4 Mrs Stock

The year 3/4 students have really enjoyed the opportunity to work altogether this term. We have joined up and had sport, phonics and Inquiry together so far. It's great to see everyone mixing together so well and to see new friendships being made.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the Hockey lesson last week and it was great to see so many students engaged and having a go.

For Inquiry, they have been learning about the difference between laws and rules. They worked well in teams to identify different situations as being a law or a rule. They were able to identify that laws are rules that apply to all people at all times and have a legal consequence.

They have been working hard in maths, learning about 2D and 3D shapes. They had to create different shapes out of nets last week and this week made 3D objects using playdough and matchsticks. They then created a powerpoint, showing their understanding of the different features of the shapes they had created.

Grade 3-4 Mrs Crosbie

Over the past 3 weeks the 3/4's have been exploring, discussing and making 3D shapes. We have been using terminology such as apex, vertices, edges, faces, sides, curved, rectangular, triangular, hexagonal, octogonal, prism, pyramid to describe the 3D shapes we have explored.

Today in maths the students put their knowledge into practice and crested 3D shapes using match sticks and playdough. Part of the session was to take photos of their shapes, place them in a keynote presentation and describe their shape using some of the terminology they have learnt during their learning sessions. The students also shared their presentations with each other to consolidate their understanding of their learning.
