Visual Art
Term 1 Unit of Inquiry is called “Mythology” which integrates with the Transdisciplinary theme- “How we express ourselves”. The Unit focuses on the qualities of Mythological Gods from a variety of cultures and the connection with the PYP Learner Profile.
Students Participate In
Drawing a design that explores the unique physical features of mythical Gods, to develop their own character.
Creating a sculptural mask using cardboard construction to depict detail and expression to create their own mythical God.
Printmaking mosaic of a unique pattern inspired by their chosen cultural mythology to be used as the background to the mask. Demonstrating clear bold, graphic design and independent printmaking skills.
Japanese
Term Focus
- Basic greetings/classroom words (revision)
- HINAMATSURI (Dolls festival),
- Hiragana characters (A and K line),
- Graduation ceremony in Japan (PYP concept of CONNECTION),
- History of Japan (Samurai eras)
PYP Unit Of Inquiry
'WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME'
Line of Inquiry: Past events shape the present and future.
Students Will Be Able To
- Do RADIO TAISO. (a Japanese exercise)
- Describe what they did over the holidays saying and writing …KATTA DES SOSHETE …KATTA DES. (Joining 2 adjectives with a conjunctional word)
- Spell their name in KATAKANA characters.
- Spell Japanese in the right order.
- Recognise (say) and spell A- W line HIRAGANA characters.
- Say and spell useful phrases for homestay in Japan like YUKKURI ITTE KUDASAI, OYASUMINASAI, etc
- Describe what HINAMATSURI (dolls festival) is, as well as why, when, how Japanese people celebrate the festival.
- Tell what Japanese graduation ceremonies are like.
- Write “Happy graduation!” to their Japanese friends.
- Tell how Samurai started and ended in history of Japan.
- Tell how, why, when Japan opened its door to the outside world in history of Japan.
Library
The children are timetabled weekly, to borrow books from the Library with their classroom teachers. During these borrowing sessions, they will gain a better understanding of Library locations and the borrowing/returning procedures.
The focus will be on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children will have the opportunity to consolidate their literacy skills and further their development in literature appreciation.
The Library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information.
Physical Education
The term one unit we are focusing on is 'How We Express Ourselves'.
Students look at the concepts of Connection and Responsibility
Responsibility
Looking after each other and the sporting equipment needed in minor games.
Safety on the sports field. Understanding Leadership roles with the class and outside of the class as a mentor and leader for other students within the school.
Connection
As a role model and leader, communicating clearly with others to enhance game performance as well as developing an understanding of different individual strengths and weaknesses and how to create a connection with those attributes to game performance and team players.
The activities we use are:
- Team Building Activities through Parachute Games and Kubb
- Throwing and Catching Strategy Games. Modified Cricket and Softball Activities
- Hockey Clinic
Refine the basic and complex motor skills of Throwing, Catching and Striking in game situations. The children will be consolidating their skills of evaluating the performance of a peer during modified Cricket and Softball games and provide constructive feedback based on performance criteria to assist skill development.
