Year 4 Urban Gardening

The following article is written by The 5R's (Ollie, Jack, Flynn, Yvie and Sophie) Year 4Z.

We learnt about health and safety around the school garden and learnt how to use the gardening tools properly. We also saw all of the plants we are growing around the school. We learnt how to empty our compost bin into the worm farm and how the worms break down the fruit and veggies into compost, which we use around the school in our garden beds.

We had a gardening lesson in our classroom where we learnt about the 5 R's: Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle and Rot. Our group was given a takeaway container and we had to choose if it could be refused, reused, reduced, recycled or rotted. Our class made posters about the 5R's which will be displayed around the school.

We are The Broccolis: Isaac, Rock, Blake and Byron from 4H.

Last week we planted some vegetable seeds, silver beet, broccoli, spinach and cauliflower into mini hot houses that are in the BER. It was lots of fun. We water them every day, they have grown a little bit and they look like a 2-leaf clover. Rock said it was fun because he was with all of his friends. Byron said that the plants look good.

We helped Ms Hudson make a zucchini cake, we picked the zucchinis from our school vegetable garden. We put the zucchini in the mixer, Rock pushed it in and Blake squished the zucchini in. The cake was delicious. Below are the ingredients that we used to make the cake.
