Digital Technology News

BYOD

Dear parents,

I am very excited to be writing to you about the beginning of a new BYOD (bring your own device) program at St Cecilia’s.

We have been working with technology in education specialist provider LWT (Learning With Technologies) to set up the program over the past few months.

The program will mean that students will be able to have their own chromebook device that they will be responsible for and will be able to use both at school and at home.

The devices will still remain managed under the school’s Google Education domain, which will allow for the school to help ensure safe and appropriate use of the devices.

The program will be introduced in 2023 for our year 3 students (the current year 2 students) and then rolled out over the next 4 years until all students from year 3-6 have their own device.

While the program is being rolled out, our current senior students (yr 3,4 & 5) will continue to be provided with school Chromebook devices.

However we are going to also make the program an option for families with students in years 3,4 & 5 if they wish to purchase a device through our BYOD portal setup with LWT.

If as a parent of a year 3, 4 or 5 student, you are interested in finding out more, on Thursday October 20 we will be holding an online information session hosted by myself and Kevin Yep from LWT to explain the processes and policies involved in purchasing the new device for your child.

On that evening you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss further the rationale behind the program and the practical implications of purchasing and setting up the new devices.

We are confident that this program is going to further enhance our students ability to engage in learning about digital technology and indeed access resources related to all areas of the curriculum.

The session will be conducted as a Google Meet beginning at 6pm on Thursday October 20.

You will be able to access the meeting using the link below:

We look forward to seeing you then.

Kind regards,

Matthew Mooney

Inform and Empower Cyber safety sessions

Look out for parent info sheets in the next Newsletter to help you talk to your child about what they learnt in the sessions.

Lego Spike Kits Have Arrived at St Cecilia's

At the start of the term we received a delivery of some very exciting STEM resources.

The class set of Spike Lego kits will be utilised across the school to teach the students design, teamwork, problem solving and concepts about coding.

The Year 2 students helped to set up the kits (and construct the storage trolley) before having an opportunity to learn how the kits work.

It was remarkable to see how far they were able to progress in such a short time. From opening the box for the first time to learning how to use the various electonic components to constructing and programming their own models.
