Grandparents and Special Friends Day

It was a wonderful sight welcoming Grandparents and Special Friends into our school this morning. Thank you to our very special guests for visiting our Art Show and supporting the sale of raffle tickets and the succulent plants, and for bidding on the amazing art pieces that will be auctioned this evening.

Thank you to the Grandparents and Special Friends who were able to share Mass with us. Again, it was wonderful to be able to gather as a community to celebrate. Thank you to Mr Millane for preparing the Mass. A special thanks to both Sophie J (6AP) and Pauline Ward (Grandparent of Lewis 1HC) for sharing their reflections of being a grandchild and grandparent.

Thank you to our Year 6 PA Representatives, Caroline Touzeau, Colleen Leyden, Rebecca Filippin and Bec Breheny, for organising Morning Tea. Thank you also to the Year 6 families who contributed savouries and sweets and to the many Year 6 parents who were able to set up and serve.

Art Show

What an amazing event our Art Show was…

I would like to acknowledge and thank our very creative and artistic children for all their skills, efforts and artworks. Without their talent, we would not have been able to hold the Art Show this year. It was fantastic seeing so many happy little people share their artwork with their special people this morning and after school today.

Thank you to all our teachers for their support of the Art Show and to our extremely talented teacher artists who have guided our children and created some stunning art pieces of their own. Thanks in particular to: Anna Walpole, Helen Chirio, Nicole Burnes, Kelly Story and Mrs Pauline Stewart (Jenny Stewart’s mother in law).  Thanks to you all for your generous contributions to our Art Show.

And last, but certainly not least, a VERY BIG thank you to Nicole Burnes (our extraordinary Art teacher). On behalf of the school community I thank Nicole for all her energy, enthusiasm and vision for not just the Art Show, but also for our whole school 'Acknowledgement of Country' mural project. We are most grateful for Nicole’s artistic flair and passion that she has so warmly imparted upon, not just our children, but on our staff and families. Nicole's inspiration and love for and of art, runs right through our school and the Sacred Heart Kew children. We are blessed to have such a dedicated and talented Visual Arts Teacher at our school.

Artist in Residence Program - Whole School Acknowledgement of Country mural

Thanks again to the Parents Association for supporting our Artist in Residence program. The PA very generously funded the entire project, benefiting our children's learning program.

Thanks to artist Annie Brigdale for all her guidance, expertise and work as our Artist in Residence. It was truly amazing to be able to meet Annie and to learn from her and about her culture and lands. We have been truly blessed to have partnered with Annie throughout this project.

I am sure that you will all agree, our mural is stunning and a lasting memory of our Acknowledgement of Country here at Sacred Heart Kew. Well done to all our children and staff for their creativity, input and ideas with this project. What an impressive and striking piece of meaningful art. Each day we can marvel and remember just how lucky we all are to be able to learn, grow, create and celebrate on Wurundjeri country.

This afternoon, as part of our mural launch, we welcomed Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Ringo who performed the Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. The children were so excited to meet Uncle Ringo and to hear all about why fire is used for this special ceremony.

Uncle Ringo explained that smoking ceremonies have been performed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for thousands of years to cleanse people and places of bad spirits and to treat sickness. These ceremonies encourage good health and wellbeing through connection to culture. They are regarded as an important part of connecting people to the country and keeping them safe.

Uncle Ringo was very impressed with our whole school mural and thanked us for our commitment to Country. We were truly blessed by Uncle Ringo’s presence today and thank him for giving up his time to come to Sacred Heart Kew.

Our Acknowledgment of Country

We acknowledge that we learn, grow, create and celebrate on Wurundjeri Country.

We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share the glorious land, sky, waterways, and wonderful wildlife with the traditional owners.

Exploring Country brings us joy, happiness and peace.

We will continue our connection with Country through respectful play, by caring for our community and the environment and engaging in learning that challenges injustice and leads change.

Sacred Heart Gardening Club Grand Plant Sale

Thank you to the Sacred Heart community for supporting our fundraising efforts today. The sale of our succulents will help us adopt a beehive near the Brisbane Ranges. Adopting a beehive means that we are helping save bees, which in turn, will help the bees to pollinate plants and help the environment. Next year we hope to have honey to sell to our Sacred Heart community.
