Japanese

Year 8 students have been learning about family, pets and fairytales in their unit on Storytelling this term.  Some classes held a “pet contest” to showcase their creative skills in conjunction with their language skills, with Wil Atkinson of 8-3, Gypsy McDonnell and  Ruby Larson of 8-1 our overall winners.

Other classes have been focusing on Japanese fairy tales and are busy writing and starring in one to perform for Kindergarten students at Mater Dei Primary. All class are also enjoying some Japanese traditional “Sashiko”, a style of sewing, which is proving a popular activity for all.

After some intense language study around days, dates and times early on in the term, Year 9 students are finishing the year off with a cross-curricula lino-print with a Japanese theme. Easier than the traditional Japanese wood-block printing, students are creating their own masterpieces in various designs with anime characters proving popular. Each design will also have Japanese kanji, katakana or hiragana used in the design.

Senior Japanese students have further increased their knowledge of grammar and kanji, recently completing units on travelling in Japan and technology. They have benefitted from several interactions with schools in Japan and will finish the year by participating in an on-line Furoshiki workshop with The Japan Foundation.
