YEAR F -2

We can’t believe how quickly Term Four is going by! This week was another busy one for us in Foundation to Year Two, with lots of exciting learning opportunities.

As part of our Discovery Time workshops, we had time and opportunity to apply our knowledge of measurement and capacity as we engaged in water play. We measured different containers, cups and jugs and used different tubes to see how the water travels through. As writers, we continued to engage in collaborative play and writing at the Post Office station. We learnt how to write and post a letter, and discovered that we need to include a stamp and the name and address of the person we are sending it to on the envelope. As creative thinkers, some of us also wrote and performed our own puppet shows at the puppet station. We had so much fun!

As inquirerswe continued to explore different people and actions that can keep us healthy. As researchers, we listened carefully to expert Lucy, who is a dental nurse, and also Thomas’ mum, to find out about dental hygiene and how it is important for our health. Lucy told us all about how to keep our teeth healthy and clean, and what happens at the dentist and even showed us some of the tools they use. We looked closely at x-rays of teeth and learnt all about the different types of teeth. We then had time and opportunity to ask questions and share all of our new discoveries. Lucy even left us all with a toothbrush and toothpaste...thank you Lucy!

As people of faith, we tuned in to the season of Advent. As researchers, we found out about the Advent Wreath and candles, the meaning of each candle and when we light them. There are three purple candles representing Hope, Peace and Love, one pink candle representing Joy and a white candle that represents Christ. We began exploring the significance of Advent as a time of waiting and preparing for the arrival of Jesus Christ by looking at different images representing Hope and making connections to how we can be hopeful during this time. Some of us also made connections to the notion of waiting by sharing and discussing times we have experienced waiting in our lives, such as birthdays, a new baby and a holiday.  This week we will light the first purple candle, the candle of Hope, read the scripture story of Noah and the Flood from Matthew 24: 37-39, and discuss who the Son of Man is and how we can be prepared and ready for him.

This week, some of us also wrote prayers of thanks in preparation for the Whole School Prayer. Well done to 1/2SC for leading us in a beautiful prayer last Friday.

This week, FLW is leading the school in prayer for the very first time,  and we can’t wait!

We look forward to another wonderful week of learning, as we continue to listen to more experts for Inquiry, unpack the season of Advent, explore the mathematical concept of Mass in 1/2 and Fractions is Foundation, and tune in to letter writing.

Foundation to Year Two Team,

Leanne Wenckowski, Alex Phillips, Alycia Marsico and Stefanie Carriera.

YEAR 3/4

Only 3 more weeks of 2022! How the year has flown!

As mathematicians, we are learning to model and represent fractions. We created a Fraction Museum to showcase how to represent fractions using a variety of materials, such as unifix blocks, teddy bears, counters and icypole sticks. We recorded the fraction on a label and its equivalent fraction. Take a look!

As inquirers, our big question is ‘Health: Have you got the message?’. Over the term, we have identified three types of health - Physical, Mental and Social. As part of taking action, we have chosen one health to promote a health message for. We are collaborating with our peers to present our health message to our class in different ways (video, slideshow, poster, recording, model). We are looking forward to presenting our final products in the last week of the term.

As members of a faith community, we are reading the different biblical stories of the Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree is a way of preparing for Advent by journeying through the stories on Jesus's family tree. As we read each story, we retell the most important information in our own words and draw an image. Take a look!

Have a lovely week!

YEAR 5/6

It has been another fun filled week for the 5/6 students this week as we begin to prepare for the end of the year!

In Literacy, the students have been exploring their favourite genres of writing and have been creating some interesting stories, poems, persuasive texts and information texts. Our year 5 students have been busy drafting and practising their speeches for the Leadership Roles for 2023. We look forward to listening to the students' speeches this coming week and wish all students the best of luck. Our year 6 students have been preparing for their graduation ceremony coming up on the 10th of December by designing their graduation hats as well as preparing some of their favourite memories of their time at St Fidelis. We look forward to sharing this with our school community in the lead up to their graduation.

In Numeracy, our students have been exploring all things fractions! We have been looking at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages and linking this to the chance and probability experiments we have conducted. They have also been learning about the process of adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators.

Within The Resilience Project the students have been exploring the connection between our emotions and our lived experiences. They were challenged to think about times they have felt emotions such as excitement, frustration, happiness and anger and reflected on how our emotions drive our actions. They created visual representations of these feelings and reflected on the strategies they have learnt throughout the year that could be used to help manage these sometimes challenging emotions.

The 5/6 students are eagerly practising for the yearly Christmas carols concert. They have been learning Christmas songs and are showing off their dance moves! We can't wait to show you what they can do!

Have a wonderful week.
