LS1 Senior: Getting Your Genius On!

This term, the students in Learning Space 1 Senior have been engaging in inquiry-based, student-directed learning called Genius Hour. The goal of Genius Hour is to increase student self-motivation and excitement for learning. The rationale behind this practice is grounded in the research around self motivation for learning and psychological well-being.The rules followed in Genius Hour include:

  • Students must start with an essential question that cannot be answered with a simple Google search.
  • Students must research their question using credible websites, interviews, and/or print resources.
  • Students must create something. Their product may be digital, physical or service-oriented.

Genius Hour fosters lifelong creativity and critical thinking. While technical skills are important, the experts largely believe that fostering soft skills, like curiosity, are important to career success. Also, by using technology to explore their interests, students are less likely to be intimidated by it.

Italian

This semester in Italian the seniors made Fruit Skewers which are called Spiedini di frutta. The students brought in fruit from home and we then made them in class. They loved making and eating them.

The Juniors learnt about Micio the cat that ate too much in the story “Mangia Mangia”. They learnt the names of various foods in Italian and how to say “Buon Appetito!”. The students also learnt lots about Italian cuisine and most of about pasta.
