Colour Run 2020

The second Heritage College Colour Run was held on Tuesday 8 December 2020, marking the final day of the academic year.

Students, families and staff gathered to celebrate across all year levels from Early Learning to Year 12 at the picturesque Officer campus.

While the premiere Colour Run event in 2019 supported the Year 12 capstone Service Trip to Nepal, this year’s event was about celebrating what has been for many, a year of challenges.

Head of Secondary Mr Darren Martin said the annual Colour Run is quickly becoming an integral part of the Heritage College calendar with a high level of participation amongst students, staff and families.

“Like so many in our community, our students were lockdown-weary and had felt that they missed out on many other events and activities during the year,” he says.

“This year’s event was perfectly timed with the relaxing of restrictions,” he said.

The course was filled with obstacles for participants to overcome, including pool noodles, tunnel ball and commando crawling. At every opportunity, participants were showered with coloured powder.

Senior Secondary Coordinator and Colour Run Event Coordinator Miss Elyse Taylor said with international travel unavailable to the Asian region at this time, planning for a local Service Trip to the interior of Australia next year is already underway.

“We look forward to learning about Indigenous culture, understanding the Indigenous stories and hearing from members of local Indigenous communities,” Miss Taylor says.

Miss Taylor also commended the fundraising effort this year, raising over $1,800 which will be contributed to the Service Trip planned for the Class of 2022.

"We are so grateful to School Colour Run for allowing us to celebrate with our students,” she says.

“Events like these help us to come together as a community which we have missed so much throughout 2020," she says.

Heritage College Welcomes 2021 Captains and Leaders

Heritage College welcomes its newly elected School Captains and student leaders for the 2021 academic year.

All positions were announced during Presentation Night on Wednesday 2 December 2020.

The successful candidates were selected as part of a student nomination process and were awarded their positions by the College Leadership team.

Heritage College Principal, Mr Sonny Aiono, congratulated the student leaders, made up of two College Captains at Year 12 level and four Primary Captains at Year 6 level. A further 24 House Captains were selected, 16 from Primary (Officer and Narre Warren South) and eight from Secondary.

Mr Aiono said the assembly of student leadership will bring fresh perspectives while building on the knowledge and experience of previous student leaders.

“I would like to thank our 2020 Captains, who participated in the student leadership program in a year like no other, abiding by their responsibilities as college representatives where possible”, he said.

“I am proud of the work of our College Captains over the last year and look forward to the coming year with our incoming student leadership team,” he said.

“Thank you to our previous College Captains for their dedication to the Heritage College community.”

Head of Primary Mr Roger Sevenhuysen said there had been significant interest in this year’s student leadership nominations.

“It was wonderful to see the number of candidates running this year and getting involved in student leadership”, he said.

College Captains and student leaders will be formally introduced to the wider community following their official announcements at Heritage Day in the first week of school in 2021.

Holidays are coming... time to plan for Vacation Care!

Holidays are drawing near, and the December Vacation Program is now available.

The Vacation Care program runs during the holidays from the Early Learning Centre OSHC Room at Officer campus. There are two weeks full of activities planned, including Karaoke Day, Lego Day, Water Fun Day, Dress Up Day and a Christmas Party Day.

Vacation Care is open to all primary students at Heritage College. Choose to enrol in the whole program or just the days that work for you. Download a copy of the program at www.heritagecollege.vic.edu.au/vacationcare.

Introducing Maths Pathway - 2021

We are very excited to inform you about some changes that are underway in our Year 5 and 6 Mathematics classrooms. Traditionally in schools, it has been extremely difficult for one teacher to cater to the learning needs of 20 individual students. As a result, not every student has experienced success in Mathematics, with many students finding it particularly stressful or difficult.

Our Year 5 and 6 teaching team is now working very hard to change that, by changing the structure of our Mathematics curriculum. From 2021, Year 5 and 6 students will join with Year 7-9 in using the Maths Pathway program. Changing the way Mathematics is taught in Year 5 and 6 will mean that instead of all students learning the same topic at the same time, each student will focus on only what they are ready to learn. We will be sending home further communication to parents of Year 5 and 6 students about these changes and will be holding an information session next year. Dear Families,

Students should keep reading for at least 10 minutes a day over the school holidays to set themselves up for a great start to the new school year.
