Spotlight on Year 4

A Spotlight on Year Four

Year 4 students have settled back at school and have enjoyed connecting and playing with their friends. They have had fun participating in a variety of different challenges and activities.

Writing Fantasy Stories

This term, students have been exploring, planning and writing their own fantasy texts. They have learned about fantasy motifs and how to plan and include one in their stories. Some of the motifs they have included are: magical objects, animals, alternative worlds, and hero’s quest. Students have been extending their ideas by including lots of adjectives and similes. They have also been editing for correct punctuation such as apostrophes and dialogue. Here are some snapshots from some of our stories for you to enjoy!

Inquiry through Zoos Victoria

Year 4 students participated in a STEM Design Challenge Program through Zoos Victoria. They learnt about the stages of Design Thinking and worked on developing an enrichment experience for the Little Penguins at the Zoo.

Students participated in a webinar with zookeepers, and listened to a fauna podcast to learn about how animals can be trained to behave in certain ways, mainly with food!

Students spent time observing penguins at the zoo through live streaming, and did further research to build their understanding of how the animal moves, behaves and uses their senses.

Students then spent time generating enrichment ideas before deciding on one, and then building a prototype of it. Students could choose to do a labelled drawing, a 3D model or use animation, among other suggestions.

Here are some of the prototypes:
