Spotlight on music staff - Carmel Slater (Head of Keyboard)

We would like to introduce to you Ms Carmel Slater (Head of Keyboard) from our Music Department. Carmel teaches students from primary to secondary years and is also one of our School accompanists who assists with School productions and choirs. If you are interested in piano lessons for your child, please contact the Music Department at music.admin@kilvington.vic.edu.au.

Prior to taking up the position of Head of Keyboard at Kilvington Grammar, Carmel had worked as a professional musician teaching at several schools in Melbourne and South Gippsland including her own private teaching studio in Leongatha.

Many of her students have gone on to have careers in the performing arts both in Australia and overseas, in areas such as performing, composing, and music theatre. Her students have won numerous awards in competitions and eisteddfods, including the Australian National Piano Award and the Melbourne International Piano and Strings Festival.

Carmel has also had an extensive career as a performer (soloist and accompanist) and musical director. She was named Musician of the Year in 1994 by the Music Guild of Victoria (for her contribution to music theatre) and was honored to be named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International in 2015, in recognition of her involvement with many musical groups, presenting numerous fundraising concerts, and fostering musical talent in the Gippsland area.

Carmel loves being part of the Kilvington community and hopes that she will continue to inspire her students to achieve their best in all areas of their life for many more years into the future.

Winter Concert goes online

This year, our Winter concert could not go ahead because we were in lockdown. This did not deter any of our students. In between lockdowns, we were able to record some of our group performances, and during lockdown the solo performances were recorded by our keen and dedicated soloists.

I applaud all the students and staff involved. It was great to continue to deliver performance opportunities during periods when we were not at School.

VCE Music performance exam preparation day

Our VCE Music performance students were lucky enough to participate in the exam preparation workshop held on Sunday 17 October.

Guiding the students through the various analytical assessment tasks was renowned music educator, Jenny Gillan, who wrote one of the VCE analysis texts.

Jenny worked on developing skills in the many areas of the written exam and also boosting student vocabulary. Students were able to complete practice questions which Jenny critiqued. This was a most beneficial Sunday afternoon.
