School Highlights

Welcome back!

It has been so wonderful to see our students back at School again!

Congratulations to our VCE students for their hard work throughout the year in trying circumstances. We wish them the very best for the exam period.

Australian Mathematics Competition

Helen Cole, Dean of Mathematics

On Thursday 5 August, the day before Lockdown 6, 74 students from Years 7 to 12 took part in the Australian Mathematics Competition.

It was 75-minutes long and comprised of 25 multiple-choice questions and five free-response questions. Kilvington received 22 Distinctions, five High Distinctions and one Prize.

Caleb Mendez is commended for answering an impressive 28 questions correctly, resulting in him winning a Prize, which is fantastic. We also congratulate the High Distinction winners, Derek Huang, Chester Webb, Jude Teo, Darcy Donohue and Jason Wang.

Student achievements – Future Problem Solvers Program

Dee Broughton, Talent Development and Enrichment Coordinator

Kilvington students have been participating in the Future Problem Solvers Program (Scenario Writing) since 2017, and in these five years, we have unearthed some exceptionally talented writers.

For the Scenario Writing competition, students write a 1500 story which is set at least 20 years into the future on a set theme. This year, we have continued to shine and achieve excellent results in a competition which sees students from around the country submitting high quality stories.

We are so proud of all our students’ efforts, and congratulate Alexander Moore (Year 5), Lucy Ma, Lucas Dyer, Daniel Miller (Year 6), Yash Kapoor (Year 7), Elijah Slavinskis, Ruby Moore, Alessia Di Felice (Year 8) and Jude Teo (Year 9), whose stories made it to the National Finals.

We are also thrilled to announce that Daniel’s story was ranked 1st nationally in the Junior Division! Congratulations to Daniel, who will now be invited to the FPSPI International Conference in 2022.

As a part of the National Finals celebrations, finalists are also invited to compete in a stand-alone competition and write a 1000-word story in one week. Well done to Yash, who came third nationally in the Middle Division, and Jude, who came first!

All the students who participated should be commended, given they found the motivation to draft and complete their stories during lockdown, when many of their competitors in other states were at school as normal. It makes these awards extra special and highlights the enthusiasm and dedication of our young writers. Thank you also to coach Elayne Flanagan for her amazing support of the Junior School participants!

Debating news

Iva Roncevic, Debating Coordinator

The DAV debating season has now come to an end, with the Kilvington teams achieving some very successful results.

Last Wednesday night, the A Grade debaters took part in the Grand Final of the Debators Association of Victoria (DAV's) debating competition against Melbourne Grammar School.

The debate was very close, and although the adjudicators felt divided between who had won, the debate was eventually awarded to Melbourne Grammar. Considering that there were over 200 A Grade teams in the competition at the start of the year, and Kilvington was in the top two, it is an achievement that the School is very proud of.

Our debaters, Hamish Bruce, Lolly Seligmann and David Overton, were all outstanding in their presentation and produced sophisticated arguments, and are looking forward to going one better next year.

This year, we also had three students win the Swannie award for best debater in the Ormond region. Those students are: Maria Wang (D Grade), Diya Matthew (C Grade) and Hamish Bruce (A Grade).

House Debating also came to a close earlier this term. The two remaining Houses - Fethers and Burman - fought for the final, with Fethers winning for the Juniors (Years 7-9) and Burman bringing it home for the Seniors (Years 10-12). The House debating was a welcome relief for some during online learning and a fun way for them to spend their lunchtime doing something different.

Overall, it has been an extraordinary year for debating at the School and, as it finishes for 2021, we look forward to continuing these successes in 2022. Students will be notified early next year about details on how to join debating for the next season.

VCE Visual Arts Awards

Each year, Kilvington presents awards to one student in each Visual Arts subject in recognition of their positive influence in class, their effort, interest and commitment to the subject and producing works to the best of their ability.
