Careers News
There are no words to describe how valuable industry experiences are for our students. Being able to step foot inside the working world of an adult helps students create realistic expectations, reduces anxiety, greatly broadens their perception of career options, increases student engagement at school and helps them decide what career they want to pursue through tangible interactions and not subjective opinions, just to name a few.
These experiences are provided to our students by you, our local community, and as a Careers Adviser I would love nothing more than to work with you, our community, to continue to provide highly valued industry experiences for our students.
During Term 4, we have been fortunate to undertake two such experiences. The first opportunity was a program called 'Productivity Bootcamp' where students explored their suitability to undertake a construction pathway. We put on our safety vests and physically walked around a purpose built construction site discussing the various trades involved and viewing work stations designed to teach foundation skills. Students were able to see, touch, feel and smell what it would be like to work in the construction industry, with the majority of students desire to become a tradie greatly increased by the experience.
Our second industry experience in Term 4 was provided by another local company called 'BE Campbell'. I can not thank the team at BE Campbell enough for their time and dedication to our students. We were provided with a wealth of knowledge from the site Operations Manager, Josh, Quality Control Officer, Adam, WH&S Officer, Nick, HR Officer, Cameron and production line supervisor, Davo to talk to our students about BE Campbell, their roles at the company, what they have been through to get to where they are and the meat processing industry as a whole. Everyone we interacted with from the production line floor to management were very happy with their career choice and displayed incredible skill that completely changed our student’s opinion of pursuing a career within the industry.
As a local member of our school community, I know how important it is to engage our students in the local labour market. Therefore, if you feel you may be able to help facilitate an industry experience at your place of work for our students. Then please, contact me at Evans High in 2021 so we can work together to create a meaningful future for our youth.
